NYC Sports Bar to Ban Sam Adams Sales During Super Bowl

Well, you knew it was coming. War. Between the two of the biggest drinking towns in America. All they needed was a reason….

Foley’s NY Pub & Restaurant,(18 West 33rd St. across from the Empire State Building), New York’s premier sports bar, announced today that it is banning the sale of Sam Adams Boston Lager during the big game between the Giants and Patriots on February 5, 2012.

“In support of Big Blue, we will be banning the sale of Sam Adams and anything Boston-related during the game. We are encouraging them instead to order Brooklyn Ale, which is brewed here in New York,” said Shaun Clancy, owner of Foley’s, who famously banned the singing of Danny Boy on St. Patrick’s Day in 2008. “The New York vs. Boston trash talking has already begun, and we’re supporting our home city.”

Foley’s has also made a friendly wager with McGreevy’s (911 Boylston Street), Boston’s top sports bar. The losing bar owner will have to travel to the winner’s city and work a bartending shift while wearing the “enemy” team’s jersey.

“Clancy better add some red and white to all that blue he’s wearing. He’s going to be making a 200 mile drive north, wearing a Tom Brady jersey and pouring us pints of Sam Adams,” said McGreevy’s owner, Ken Casey, who is also founder / front man for the popular Irish punk rock band, the Dropkick Murphys.

Additionally, Foley’s and McGreevy’s are betting the proceeds from sales of Shepherd’s Pie, a top selling menu item at both Irish pubs, during the big game with the loser donating the money to the winner’s charity of choice. Foley’s has selected New York Yankees pitcher David Robertson’s High Socks for Hope Foundation, which helps tornado victims in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. In true Boston vs. New York spirit, McGreevy’s has selected the Claddagh Fund, which helps underfunded non-profit organizations in Boston and Philadelphia, as its beneficiary.
