Giants’ defense: your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to get to Tom Brady and apply pressure while rattling his psyche. If you do this, then you can become Super Bowl Champions.
They did it once before, so why not do it again?
It is no secret that to beat the Patriots, you have to take out Tom Brady.
“The way to kill the snake is to take off his head,” Justin Tuck so eloquently put. “The way to kill an offense as potent as that one is making sure you take care of Brady. Our defensive front will put a lot of pressure on itself to make sure that we do our best to get after him.”
In Super Bowl XLII, the Giants relentlessly put pressure on Brady. On that day the Giants sacked Brady five times while hitting and harassing him countless other times. For a guy who threw for 4,806 yards and 50 TD’s in 2007, Brady only passed for 266 yards and one touchdown when the teams met in the Super Bowl four years ago.
So the onus is for the Giants to dig down, apply pressure and the formula to win the game is right in their own hands.
“Applying pressure is a big thing, otherwise he is going to dink and drop us all the way in our secondary,” said Jason Pierre-Paul. “We just have to get to him fast enough and at the same time we have to play the run game and stay positive and focus on what is in front of us.”
So, while the need to go point for point with the Patriots may be tempting and scoring points may be the theme of the Super Bowl, the tried and true method of pressuring the quarterback is the plan the Giants should stick to.
