Gronkowski’s Ankle Injury More Severe Than Originally Thought
Patriots’ TE Rob Gronkowski suffered a high ankle sprain in the AFC Championship game last week, according to a report from WIVB-TV in Western New York.
According to WIVB’s John Murphy, Gronkowski’s father, Gordy, told him the exact nature of his son’s condition..
”Rob suffered a high ankle sprain in the AFC Championship game last Sunday. But he says with two weeks to go until the Super Bowl, he expects his son will be fine for the game.”
Bill Belichick must not be pleased with the elder Gronkowski divulging injury statuses in the media. In New England, no one speaks of the severity of injuries, not even Belichick himself. They’re like state secrets.
“He must not have read the sign on the door,” said Pats’ ST captain Matthew Slater as per CSNNE’s Danny Picard. “We’ve got to get him caught up to speed on that. You’re not supposed to disclose that kind of stuff.”
Ian Rapoport of the Boston Herald reports the injury is certain to affect Gronkowski’s performance in the Super Bowl….
The ailment, which arose while Gronkowski was being tackled by Ravens safety Bernard Pollard last week, generally requires 4-6 weeks of recovery time.
Instead, Gronkowski rested it this week, sitting out two days of practice and receiving treatment. The expectation is that the game’s most productive tight end will receive a numbing shot but that he’ll play.
After the season, however, Gronkowski will likely need minor surgery to repair the injury and clean up the issues. As is the case with most ankle sprains, there is ligament damage.
