New York Giants News and Notes For Aug 20
The Giants will break camp today after a quick walk-thru at 9:45. They will play Pittsburgh Steelers tomorrow night at 7:00pm – the first-ever Giants home game in the New Meadowlands Stadium.
Eli Manning will not play in Saturday’s game. Neither will his understudy, Jim Sorgi, who out at least the next two weeks, maybe more. Yesterday at practice, third-string QB Rhett Bomar and recently signed Dom Randolph handled all the snaps.
The re is speculation that the QB shortage may force the Giants to employ the wildcat with S Antrel Rolle at the point. Tom Coughlin did not dismiss the idea – “You never say never.”
WR Ramses Barden has a back pain that the team is still trying to diagnose. He will probably not play on Saturday, which might give Victor Cruz more opportunities.
OL Chris Snee (knee) and S Michael Johnson (back) will not play, either. Neither has been practicing. “He’s getting better, he’s doing better,” Coughlin said of Snee. He said Johnson was “getting closer” to returning as well.
S Kenny Philips and LB Keith Bulluck are cleared to play in Saturday’s game. How much each will play is still undetermined.
P Matt Dodge is trying everything and anything to improve his kicks. He is employing an Aussie-style method to get better placement on his punts. The ball travels end-over-end.
Gerris Wilkinson is getting more playing time. Michael Boley is losing playing time.
Speculation is that since the WILL and SAM linebacker positions are not used traditionally in Perry Fewell‘s defense (the SAM does not always line up over the TE), Wilkinson fits better in certain situations. That is no reflection on Boley, who has played very well. It’s just that Wilkinson has caught the coaches’ eyes and is getting more reps.
