Ross Primed For Any – and Every – Challenge

by John Fennelly on August 11th, 2010 at 6:50 pm

Giants GM Jerry Reese said on a radio show yesterday that CB Aaron Ross was the player he was impressed with the most this summer.  Ross’s career has been marred by injuries, most notably a nagging hamstring, and he has yet to show Giant fans and the NFL what he’s capable of.

Today, he met with the pool outside of the Indian Quad at U Albany…

On what he is doing differently to prepare and maintain his body:

I’m taking better care of my body. I’m getting a little older, now. In college, I can go kill myself then go right to the house and go to sleep.

Now, I have to get up, get in the tub (he goes in a hot before a workout and a cold tub afterwards) stretch a little bit..like I said, I’m taking better care now.

Have you taken ice baths before this year?

I’ve never done it until this year. I’m still shivering, now.

I know now that if I take care of my body, my body will take care of me.

On playing with safeties Antrel Rolle and Deon Grant:

Antrel and Grant, those are seasoned guys, so they give you a little hint where before the guys they had to really play their techniques.  Now, we have guys that have been in the league awhile that can tell us “jump this route” or “I got you over the top”, so you really don’t have to play as timid. You can play more aggressive. Last year, we had to press, so you couldn’t gamble as much, so if you gambled, then you got beat.

Will the new scheme lead to more interceptions?

I think so. We have out eyes to the quarterback a lot more, so we get to break on the ball before the receiver breaks.

On the influence his wife, Olympic Gold Medal runner Sanya Richards Ross, has on him:

She’s my biggest fan and my biggest critic. She says I need to work on my technique (laughter).

On being a candidate for the open punt returner job:

From day one, since I came in I wanted to be a punt returner. I did a really good job in college as a returner, so I’m finally getting the opportunity and I want to take full advantage of it.

I’m willing, I’m ready and I can do it.
