Fantasy Football: QBs 1-12

by Rich Resch on August 10th, 2010 at 10:00 am

Why should you trust me?

You shouldn’t take fantasy football advice from just anyone, especially a total stranger on the internet.  You wouldn’t take stock tips from some homeless person who sleeps on the train, would you?  So why should you trust me, also a homeless person who sleeps on the train, with fantasy football advice?

I’ll tell you why:

I’ve been competing in fantasy football since before you were born, and I’ve never lost a league.  I’ve even won leagues I didn’t participate in.  Salman Rushdie once said that my fantasy football performance was his inspiration for the award winning novel “Midnight’s Children.”

So if you want to win your league, or a league you aren’t in, you’d best heed my advice.  If you do, you have an 88% chance of taking home some hardware.  Guaranteed.

So let’s get to the rankings.  Here’s the top 12 QBs.  13-24 comes tomorrow.

These rankings are for standard leagues, no points per reception.  This also assumes Favre does not retire.

1. Drew Brees- The first three are pretty close for me, but Brees is still in his prime, as are most of his offensive weapons.  Colston, Meachem, Henderson, Bush and Thomas are all effective pass-catchers, but he could turn a bunch of scrubs into legitimate receivers.  You can’t go wrong with any of the top three, but Brees gets the slight edge.

2. Aaron Rodgers- Last year’s #1 fantasy QB should flourish again, especially with a full season of Jermichael Finley.

3. Peyton Manning- Rodgers and Manning are neck and neck, but when players are that close, I like to look at their fantasy playoff matches.  And the fact is, there’s always a shot Peyton will be resting by week 16.  Aside from that, this guy is still as good as anyone.

4. Tom Brady- He’ll get his timing back and click with Randy Moss for another huge season.  Welker’s progress is encouraging.

5. Tony Romo- Miles Austin, Dez Bryant and Jason Witten will form a high octane receiving corps.   20:5 touchdown to INT ratio in 12 games once Miles Austin became a starter.  You wouldn’t be wrong to draft him over Brady.

6. Matt Schaub- Health is always a concern, but with Andre Johnson and a healthy Owen Daniesl, Schaub will show that his 2009 season was no fluke.

7. Phillip Rivers- Vincent Jackson or no Vincent Jackson, Rivers’ big arm will make him a valuable asset…but honestly, Rivers owners should pray for Vincent Jackson.  With no word on V-Jax, I’d probably let someone else take the risk.

8. Eli Manning- Manning took a big step forward last year, on a gimpy foot.  Now with Hakeem Nicks in his sophomore season, the Giants have a fantastic young group of receivers, and Eli will be the beneficiary.

9. Brett Favre- Sidney Rice, Percy Harvin and Bernard Berrian forms a solid receiving trio.  Now he’s just gotta get that pesky retirement thing figured out and he’ll become the NFL’s first ever Grandpa.

10. Joe Flacco- No ones ever doubted Flacco’s arm, and now with the addition of Anquan Boldin, he has a legitimate weapon to throw to.

11. Jay Cutler- The Bears have some solid receivers that casual fans don’t know about, and Mike Martz could do the trick for the inconsistent Cutler, but he’s also prone to the three-plus interception game.

12. Kevin Kolb- All of the pieces are there for Kolb. He just needs to show that his play in limited time last year was not a fluke.  This is your classic high risk, high reward.

By reading up until this point, you’ve already increased your chances of making your fantasy playoffs by 8%.  Congratulations.

Check back tomorrow for QBs 13-24.
