Albany Decision Still Not Official
We know the Giants will be in Albany come late July, but for how many weeks?
CEO John Mara is still hedging making the announcement. Apparently there are some “minor details” that need to be worked out.
It’s still only May, but upstate NY gets crowded during that time of year, with Saratoga being open and all. People want to get their reservations in order for the summer.
In the past, Mara has always felt that holding camp out of town was a integral form of teambuilding. It is, but we can also understand his apprehension. The Timex Performance Center adjacent to the New Meadowlands is perfectly capable of hosting year-round training.
Then there is that $35 million deal the Giants have with Timex. Not sure of the specifics of that contract, but I’m sure Timex would benefit if the Giants simply stayed there year round.
U of Albany does not have an indoor facility to run scrimmages in inclement weather, not does it have a field equipped with Field Turf, the state-of-the-art surface installed at the New Meadowlands.
These are two drawbacks of leaving Timex for Albany. It is widely believed the Giants will be in Albany for a shorter time this year. Last year the team practiced 17 out of the 23 days they were in the state capital.
