Read: Giants and Saints Talked Cofield During Draft

by Jon Schneider on April 27th, 2010 at 10:30 am

in a report from Jason La Canfora on NFL.com, the Giants and Saints were reportedly in discussion involving DT Barry Cofield. Reportedly, the trade involved a day two draft pick, which would’ve meant a 2nd or 3rd rounder.

The talks got to a point where the Saints actually spoke to the DT. Discussions pretty much came to a halt when the Saints and Cofield couldn’t work out a long-term extension.

I’m glad the Giants didn’t make this move. Assuming no other moves would’ve been made, Bernard and Canty would’ve been our starting DT’s. I don’t like that at all. I guess there’s also the possibility that Coughlin’s considering having Tuck play the inside a little bit again. Or maybe, we just have a tremendous amount of confidence in the new guy Linval Joseph.

If this move was made, the Giants would have joined a number of other teams who traded or cut quality veteran players on a day where their position was drafted. Oakland drafted McClain, and in turn traded a quality ILB in Kirk Morrison. The Jets drafted Vlad Ducasse and then cut Faneca. The Jags…drafted Mr. Tyson “reach” Alualu, and then got rid of their most veteran locker room guy John Henderson.

I’d include the Washington/Joe McNight situation too, but you could kinda see where they’re coming from in getting rid of the injured Washington.

I don’t get it. Why not keep these studs on your team and let them teach the new guys the tricks of the trade. There’s no doubt Ducasse or McClain would’ve only benefited long-term from playing with (or behind) guys like Morrison and Faneca.

Regardless, with the talk of the Giants being interested in John Henderson, and the drafting of the DT Joseph, it seems that it may be sooner than later that  Cofield’s on another roster.

Henderson is already scheduled for visits with the Chiefs on Wednesday, and soon after, the New York football Giants.

I’m surprised noone has mentioned anything about Jay Alford in this. Jay is only coming into his 4th year, with missing all of last year. If anyone remembres the last sack of the 07 superbowl, that was Jay Alford, and he drove Brady back with some force. However he is coming back from an injury, so I’m not so sure of his production next year, but he certainly seems to be promising in years to come.

I agree Alford is a talented, young DT but I do not think the Giants can count on him for this year. Obviously I hope he is healthy and contributes but I do not think the Giants can expect him to be a starter. I think keeping Cofield is the smart move until Joseph or another DT steps up. I am really hoping to sign Henderson. I think he can be a presence in the middle of our d-line and add depth to a position that we had question marks at last year.

Cofield is a free agent after this year. So get a 2nd or 3rd rounder this year and hope Bernard/Alford/Joseph could at least match his production or get nothing when he walks at the end of the season? I think it would have made sense to get the compensation. Plus with that potential 2nd or 3rd rounder we could have gotten a MLB like Lee or Spikes.

To be honest, I don;t have the skinny on any of this…we just found this out.

We know Cofield is unhappy with his tender price, but that is all. The Giants decided against trading him – for now. If a few guys emerge this summer, they may rethink the Saints deal like they did with Shockey a few years ago.

They are locked into Canty, and they still have Bernard. Now they have this Linval Joseph, who if is as good as advertised would make Cofiled expendable.

There are also rumblings of making Tuck a DT and moving Sintim to DE rotation.

  • BIG_BLU_28

Moving Sintim to DE would be the stupidest thing you could do. He should be starting at LB this season…

    I like Cofield and I’m glad he’s still a Giant…

    • http://www.profootballnyc.com John Fennelly

Sintim is a pure pass rusher at LB from a 3-4 alignment, which means he spent a lot of time in college with his hand on the ground

He does not fit the prototype as a SAM backer in a 4-3.

His college scouting reports had him listed as a player who should be moved to DE in the NFL.

I’m glad this didn’t go down. What s Reese thinking? Cofeild is young. He’s been a quality Giant for the most part. I’m surprised Bernard or Canty – especially Bernard weren’t offered for a day 3 pick, even Alford who can’t stay healthy. If

    • BigJohn

They may have been offered but I don’t know how many takers there would have been for Rocky or Canty based on last years performance….

      • igs

        BigJohn,

I hear you. I understand that all but Bernard may still warranted a 6th or 7th round pick. (Not that Reese would have done anything smart with the pick.) But the point is that Cofield, of all the DTs to go, it shouldn’t be Cofiled. I’m also starting to feel like we’ve been hanging on to this Jay Alford dream for too long. Much like D.J. Ware and Sinorice Moss.

      his knee is shot

      • igs

        John,

So why was Sintim drafted if he doesn’t fit the mold for a Giants LB? Do you find fault with jerry Reese there?

Were you saying that Cofield’s knee is shot or Jay Alford?

New York Giants (Last Year: 8-8) – Buy Tickets

    2010 NFL Draft Grades:

Giants general manager Jerry Reese usually has smart, safe drafts where he takes the best player off the board. So having said that, it was very strange to see Reese draft players like Jason Pierre-Paul and Linval Joseph – two very athletic high-risk, high-upside players.

Inside linebacker was a huge need that Reese didn’t address until the fourth round with Phillip Dillard. Dillard was decent value there, but it’s unclear if he’ll be an upgrade over Antonio Pierce. Why not draft Sean Weatherspoon at No. 15? Weatherspoon would have been a better fit for Perry Fewell’s defense than Rolando McClain.

Overall, it’s possible that we’ll look back in a few years and give the Giants an A+ grade if Pierre-Paul and Joseph pan out. It’s more likely, however, that New York will deserve an F because those two players have a high bust rate. So, let’s meet in the middle and give the Giants a C.

Overall 2010 NFL Draft Grade given on 4/26/10: C

-This is Walter. He had the exact same analysis on the Giants picks and on the Weatherspoon McClain situation as I did. He actually feels better about Dillard than I do.
