NFL Draft 2010: Giants May Be Thinking Offense, Not Defense

by John Fennelly on March 28th, 2010 at 8:11 am

I will say this again: the NFL is morphing into a grander version of arena football. The teams that succeed are the ones that:

A) have a franchise quarterback
B) have 5-7 receiving options including a tight end who is mainly a receiver
C) a running back that can catch and/or take it to the house every time he touches the ball
D) a defense based on speed to counter teams that possess the above qualities

Now with that in mind, go back and redo you mock drafts.

The Giants have A, are still figuring out B but could use help at C and D.

With the 15th pick, it is doubtful, based on what I just laid out, that the Giants will take a defensive tackle. If they do, then they just don’t get it.

Everyone is clamoring for Rolando McClain. He is not suited for the 4-3 and he has even said he would rather play in a 3-4. He may end up being a star and if the Giants pass on him they may regret it. But you can’t pick everyone….

Here are the determining factors of what will drive the Giants’ choice in the first round:

Are they comfortable with their current options at MLB? Maybe Gerris Wilkinson turns out to be the guy…

What is the prognosis on Kenny Phillips? If there’s any doubt he won’t be able to help them this season they might pick a safety…or a corner. Aaron Ross could moved to safety. There are 8-10 quality secondary players in this draft.

You can never have enough offensive lineman, but which position is the priority? This draft is loaded with quality lineman.

How about that home-run hitter on offense? A RB like C.J. Spiller would give the Giants that extra dimension they’ve been lacking.

You want to see Eli smile?   I guarantee he will if Jerry Reese takes TE Jermaine Gresham or a WR such as Arrelious Benn or Demaryius Thomas…

No matter who the Giants take at #15, they will instantly be a better team. In fact, this draft has so many good prospects experts are saying each team should emerge with three, if not more, players that can help immediately.

So, Giant fans, choose your weapons. The obvious ones may not be the best.  In this ever-changing game, you need to stay ahead of the curve….

I’d be very happy if the Giants decided to pick up Germain Gresham.

I think he’s going to be a good one….depends on where he lands

Gresham would be great but we really have not seen what our pick at TE last year can do and Eli just does not like throwing to the TE Boss was open I dont think thats the problem. Eli settles on specific players and throws to them. He needs to spread the ball out more. Steve Smith caught the ball over a 100 times last year. Also, CJ Spiller would be a explosive pick but I disagree with the notion that the Giants dont have that already. Bradshaw is plenty explosive and still very young. Plus they have not even got to see what Shawn Greene can do. If anything I would take a RB in the later rounds like a Tobey Gerhart (A bruser) who can fill in once Jacobs retires or gets hurt. The Giants have always been a smash mouth hard nosed team. Thats the way I like them and thats the way they win. The league is changing but not necessarily for the better.and the Giants have proven they can win with their style however conservative it might seem to be. This being said the best move the Giants could make is to take the best Offensive lineman availabe I hope its Mike Iupati. Eli being a pocket passer needs a strong offensive line and he will be just as happy with this pick even if a lot fans would not be.

They have 2 picks in the first 47…they’re going to come out with two studs…..keep in mind that RFA activity may heat up as the draft gets closer and that the draft order always changes before draft day b/c of trades

You mentioned Shawn Greene (actually his name is Shonn Greene)…we don’t have him….he’s a Jet…..I think your are referring to Andre Brown…and yes, he will be ready for camp, but Achilles injuries are difficult to come back from….he will get reps and a chance again this summer

  • JaymanJD

Judging by Osi’s attitude at camp I would not be surprised if he is traded just like Shockey. I do not think they should trade him because when Osi is right he is one of the best DE in the league and their depth at the position would suffer greatly. However, my question is if they decided OSi had to go who would they trade up to snatch. Or would they simply take a 2nd round pick and say bye bye. I sill think that the only way I would trade up is to snatch Berry even with Rolle and Phillips. Other than that I don’t think any of the players ahead are worth trading up to snatch even Mclain or the DT’s. I just dont think their value istht much greater than someone at 15 except for a talent like Berry or maybe the best OFlimen.

You have got to be joking right?

Wheatherspoon is the Athletic MLB that fits in your NFL Arena league.

Weatherspoon is great and he may be the answer in years to come, but he won;t be the answer on opening day….

Why do people think rookies can come right in and play without missing a beat? Sure, they need to draft a MLB but one those three veteran guys is going to start there this season.

The Giants need to win eleven or more games or PSL holders are going to go apes*** ……the three internal guys have all been to multiple camps, understand what is expected of them are indoctrinated into the NFL

They can’t afford to lose games to Dallas and Philly while hoping a rookie will get seasoned quickly in the middle of their defense….its going to take time for Tom Coughlin to hand any rookie the keys to the family car….

John I get your point and agree. No, a rookie can’t step in and call the signals on defense. Do we have a MLB that can hold the seat for the rookie while he learns the defense, yes. Goff is the guy. Wilkinson is a Will backer. I don’t see how he can be a legit contender for the spot when he couldn’t win the job at Will. Something that he is most suited for.

Do we still need an impact Mike? Yes. Regardless if he can start day 1. Mclain might be a rookie that could get the defense a lot quicker than the most. At least that is what most scouting reports say.
