Saturday News; Blogosphere Gems

by John Fennelly on March 13th, 2010 at 7:10 am

Every once in a while we zip around the internet to check on what is being said and written about the Giants. The local radio and television station websites, along with the local beat reporters are usually too generic, so today we check in with the “alternative media” – the blogs.

Our friends at Giants Gab took a whack at a mock draft and who the Giants might take in the first three rounds. You’ll be shocked by this one, guaranteed….

My man Glenn Warciski at Ultimate NYG discusses the value of “hidden yardage” and why the Giants are looking to replace Lawrence Tynes on kickoffs……..

Ernie Palladino tells us about performance-based-pay earned by players: how it works and who got the most….

At Inside Football, Patricia Triana continues to inform and enlighten us with her “Letters to the Editor” series…..Pat , like Ernie, is accredited member of the Giants’ beat reporter pool…..

News and Notes

Not a lot happening right now, as expected.  There were a few College Pro Days and a smattering of minor free-agent signings this week, but nothing that shook the landscape.  The Giants continued to fill holes by signing QB Jim Sorgi to replace David Carr, who signed with San Francisco.

The Redskins finally made a move, signing RB Larry Johnson to a 3-year deal.  How much does Johnson have left in the tank, though..? We shall see……..Philadelphia brought back WR Hank Baskett and are reportedly looking to sign Raiders’ RB Justin Fargas.  If nothing else, these signings will guarantee some celebrities in the stands.  Baskett is married to reality TV star Kendra Wilkinson and Fargas’ dad is actor Antonio Fargas, who reached fame as “Huggy Bear” on the ’70′s TV series “Starsky and Hutch”.

The Cowboys have been quiet thus far.  They are one of the “final eight” teams who are limited in free agency.  They can still bring in players that have been released by other teams, though. They just haven’t so far.

According to USA Today, owner Jerry Jones is exercising patience:

“There’s no angst about getting anxious here,” the Cowboys owner said. “We’re just watching it unfold. We’re pleased with what we have in place with the Dallas Cowboys, but if you look at our past several years, we’ve never jumped right out there in free agency.  The last several years, we haven’t been big off-the-bat right out front. We’ve been concentrating on our own players and you see the result of it. DeMarcus Ware signing, and the fact that we’ve signed a lot of the players that we’ve signed and we’re in various stages of trying to sign the ones that aren’t signed.”

“We will be active,” Jones said. “I’m anticipating some value and opportunities that are not there right now.”

I like this draft because it demonstrates how much variety there is. Yes the ILB class is fairly deep, but Micah Johnson? In the 3rd round? I don’t think so. If the G-men were looking to go ILB in the 3rd round, I would think they would go with a guy like Jamar Chaney or Sean Lee. Both of whom offer everything that Johnson offers but Sean lee offers more play making ability while Chaney offers more play making ability and a lot more speed. And I do mean in game speed.

-Question, hypothetically, if the Giants were to go BPA wouldn’t it be Gresham or Griffin?

I feel if they went OL, DT, then they would almost have to trade the third for Morrison. I like Jamar Chaney a lot for the 4th round. I know Sean Lee will not be there in the 3rd. I am 99% sure that Lee will be off the board by the time we pick in the 3rd.

*The 1% is for the unpredictability of Al Davis on draft day.

Thanks for the link by the way. Solid scouting report.

BPA- You know how I feel about going BPA on Gresham. My television is sweating bullets. As for Brandon Graham, another 3-4 OLB? Really? Don’t we already have one? No thanks. I will throw my TV for that pick to. So keep your head on a swivel television.

Oops Everson Griffen. I somehow thought you were talking about Brandon Graham. Don’t ask me how. Anyway, yeah don’t think Everson Griffen is a top 15 pick, so he will not be BPA. He should not be BPA.

Do you think Ricky Sapp would make it to the third round?

        • igs

Who knows with sapp. His stock has really fluctuated. He would be nice in 3.

*I said Griffin. I meant Morgan. lol. seriously. BPAs I expect to be around at 15 are Gresham and Morgan.

*I said Griffin, I meant Morgan out of GT.

Big Blue View just posted a collection of scouting reports on Cheny. I would be happy with this pick:

I would be alright with Brian Bulaga. I don’t think he will make to us, but it would definitely help our O-line for the next five years.

I am fine with Arthur Jones too. The only problem I have is that they would have walked away without an LB in the first two rounds. So It would be very important for the Giants to give away that 3rd rounder in exchange for Morrison. I would be happy if this happened.
