Giants Still A Step Behind

Big Blue Learns That “Speed Kills” The Hard Way

You could say last night was DeSean Jackson‘s Deion Sanders moment.  He flew past the Giants as if it were a non-contact drill. He does that to a lot of teams. He hasn’t been healthy recently. I guess its safe to say he’s recovered.

The Giants had done all they could to keep up with the fleet, opportunistic Philadelphia Eagles last night, but at all times seemed to be a step behind.

Even when they pulled ahead 31-30 in the third quarter, any football mind worth his salt knew that this was only temporary.  The Giants defense – even with their fastest options on the field – were no match for the Eagles’ quicksilver receivers and their unfettered quarterback, Donovan McNabb.

I do not understand why they play the schemes they do on defense. It seems the more field they have behind them, the more vulnerable they are.

My observations and notes from last night…….

The Eagles defense better play tighter than they did last night or they will be exiting the playoffs early this year….they had a sloppy night tackling……

The Giants actually won this slugfest to the naked eye…the Eagles just landed more big punches. The Giants held the ball for almost 35 minutes to the Eagles’ 25 and ran 72 plays to the Eagles’ 53.

Like I’ve been saying, its a big-play league and the Giants shot themselves in the foot several times:

Brandon Jacobs‘ fumble that resulted in a 60-yard TD for Philadelphia….not much he could have done, but that play ended up being the margin of victory…..

Eli Manning‘s fumble on the Eagles’ 29 that killed a drive…just a bad case of not taking care of the football

Mario Manningham’s two catches in the corner of the end zone that were ruled out of bounds…he needs to learn where he is on the field or we don’t need him……

The defense not picking up McNabb’s “fumble” after Osi Umenyiora stripped him……the Eagles ended up driving down the field for a TD on this possession……but the Giants said they didn’t pick it up because the whistle blew and figured it was an incomplete pass (like the rest of us did)…….

The Giants racked up 500 yards of total offense for only the third time in 42 years. They had 524 vs Green Bay in 2002 and 523 vs Seattle on October 5th last year…..

On the very next play, Coughlin called a timeout with 1-2 seconds left on the snap clock and a man in motion between mcnabb and the center. This would have resulted in a delay of game penalty or an Eagles timeout. McNabb completed a 40 yard pass play to Jackson coming out of the timeout. Well done.

“(Manningham) needs to learn where he is on the field or we don’t need him……”

Manningham made a mistake, but it happens. He’s an important part of this offense and in my opinion, he does more than people give him credit for.

I agree its a little harsh, but this is the NFL and he needs to concentrate better on the task at hand

with time he’ll learn. This is his first year as a starter and he’s had his ups and downs.

History always shows flaws and with his mistakes he can learn how to fix them. Luckily Tom Coughlin started out as a Wide Receivers coach, so at least Manningham has the right guy to work with him.
