Practice Notes and Injury news
Jonathan Goff practiced at MLB with the first unit. Most likely the Giants will have Goff and Chase Blackburn compete for the spot the rest of the year.
With Antonio Pierce out for the year the Giants must find out if they have his replacement on the roster before years end. That said, they are not out of the playoff hunt so they will have to chose the Linebacker that gives them the best chance to win NOW. The good news here is that the Giants coaching staff feels comfortable enough with Goff to give him first team snaps.
RB Danny (or DJ) Ware will not practice today (concussion) and with all the new concussion rules coming into play it’s unlikely he will play Sunday. With Ahmad Bradshaw in a boot and not cleared to resume practice the Giants are down to 2 running backs, Brandon Jacobs and Gartrell Johnson.
Jacobs can carry the load but he has had knee issues this year and has had to come out of several games, mid game. Gartrell looked good in very limited action, but 2 backs is playing it very thin. Which leads to this:
S Michael Johnson will not practice today (Groin). If Johnson cannot go the Giants would have to sign either S Sha’reff Rashad or S Vince Anderson from the practice squad.
I am not even getting into the fact that the safety carousel would then be a terrifying trio of CC Brown/ Aaron Rouse and Aaron Ross, but simply getting into the numbers. The Giants will need a third back, so if Johnson is a no-go, and Anderson or Rashad is signed, the Giants will need to IR or cut a player to get a third back on the team. We will find out all the roster moves in the coming days. Which leaads to this:
The Giants worked out RB Dominick Rhodes and T.J. Duckett is September, but the more likely candidate is Allen Patrick, who is currently on the Jacksonville practice squad. Patrick was on the Giants practice squad earlier this year. Rhodes’s agent has already said that the Giants would not make Dominick there guy.
Lastly LB Michael Boley is practicing but has a back issue and WR Derek Hagan will be a limited with a hamstring. Despite all the stress reaction talks Eli will be practicing in full capacity today.
