What looked like what was going to be a great comeback for the New York Giants quickly turned into a heartbreaking loss. After shutting out the Chargers for most of the third quarter and scoring 13 unanswered, Philip Rivers threw a 18 yard strike to Vincent Jackson in the end zone to ultimately seal the deal.
The Giants had some decent pressure on Rivers all day, and the secondary really stepped up to hold a Chargers receiving attack to just over 200 yards, but it wasn’t enough. They also had two picks on Mr. Rivers, both in which were a combination of both pressure on the quarterback and the seecondary being in the right position.
Even though the Gmen were down for most of the game, one had the feeling that they had the game under control, and with just 2:11 seconds left and a 20-14 lead, one could have been quite confident the defense was going to step it up and get the big stop.
Unfortunately, it was not the case, as technically former Giant Phillip Rivers looked as sharp as ever, working all sides of the field, and ultimately leading his team to a 21-20 win.
I really think something needs to be said about the play of the offensive line today. The Chargers, who are not specifically strong in sacking and hurrying the quarterback, had five sacks today and six hits on Eli. It all starts up front, and although Eli did have a good game statistically, did not have time to make the plays he needed to make when he needed to make them.
Too many times throughout this game I watched as Eli rolled out of the pocket and was either forced to make a tough throw or just plain throw it away. Do give credit to the Chargers’ Shawne Merriman though who had two sacks on his own. Merriman, who has looked somewhat slower than his old self looked as though he played his best game of the season.

Whoever was responsible for those gutless calls on the last true offensive possession should be fired. Eli played great today and to not trust him a spot where a TD wins the game is absolutely unacceptable.
And the season is over. We needed that game and the players/coaches knew it. We’re on our way to an 8-8/9-7 season and no playoffs. I thought it couldnt get any worse than baseball season.
You hit it right on the head…..
