News and Notes

1) Tom Coughlin has declared Larence Tynes the Giants kicker despite bringing in Matt Stover and Matt Bryant for a test run. The declaration came witha caveat:

“We’re going to try to keep ourselves informed as to the availability of who is out there, no matter what,” Coughlin said. “We do have an issue that we have to get corrected, let’s face it. We have to stop … these three points are going to be so critical going forward.”

2) Tom Rock of Newsday takes a look an exchange between Antonio Pierce and Mart Schottenheimer on Sirius radio yesterday. The exchange is based on the NFL’s protection of the Quarterback and what happened last week when Terrell Suggs was called for a 15 yard penalty for going after Tom Brady’s knees, the call was very questionable. Schottenheimer and Pierce disagree on the matter but what is interesting ins the level of respect both men have for each other and to me it’s always great to hear AP speak. Everything he says seems to be well thought out and just comes off as a smart guy to me, evryuthing you’d want in the QB  of the D, that a nice big chip on the shoulder.

3) The other New York team made a splash today and traded for troubled wide out Braylon Edwards. In the deal the Jets sent key special-teams player Jason Trusnik, wide receiver Chansi Stuckey and a 3rd and 5th round pick  to Cleveland. The Jets looked into former Giant Plaxico Burress in the off-season and was interested in adding what they call a number one guy.

Edwards is a physically gifted athlete and a big wideout. He will make Mark Sanchez’s life easier,  or will he? Edwards is always amongst league leaders in balls dropped, but also has a great ability to get open. In recent years the Giants have proved that nothing is more important then draft picks, but the Jets are willing to take the risk, we will see if it pays off.

4) Hakeem Nicks and Corey Webster took part in special teams today. Most likely Webster is just there as a precaution for punt returns, and would be an automatic fair catch if it came down to him. Nicks however is a bit more intriguing, the wideout has shown amazing ability throughout pre-season and in the KC game to get big yards after the catch. With Hixon and Ware getting closer to returning we probably will see neither guy in the rotation, but there may be a sighting in the Oakland game.
