New Place, New Face: Al Holcomb

09_holcombFor the ’09 season, the New York Giants have named another new coach to their staff, Al Holcomb, who joins the team as the defensive quality control coach.

In case you were asking yourself what exactly a defensive quality control coach does, here’s the answer. Primarily, a defensive quality control coach’s responsibilities entail going over game film throughout the week, scouting, and preparing the team for the week’s opponent.

Holcomb joins the Giants after serving three years as a defensive line coach at Lafayette. His defensive line last season was responsible for holding opponents to the least amount of first downs in the Patriot league, while also having the lowest passing efficiency by opposing quarterbacks.

He has no NFL experience thus far except for a small internship he had with the Jets in the Summer of 2007 where he worked with the team’s defense.

From what i’ve read, this type of position on an NFL team is typically where a guy like Holcomb starts. This is pretty much his first shot at the big show so to speak. He certainly did some good things with Lafayette, having three players on his line be mentioned on all-conference teams so it should be interesting to see how he could help at the professional level.

Fun fact: Jason Garrett (Cowboys offensive coordinator) not so long ago filled the position for the Miami Dolphins as offensive quality control coach. He made his way up the chain rather quickly.
