Eli Manning‘s rookie contract is up after this year and according to the New York Daily News Mannings representative will look to make Eli the highest paid player in all of football. Sources say the Giants and Manning are far apart in negotiations but neither side is panicking. While both sides wanted to get a deal done this spring both parties feel the deal will get done at some point in the near future, and the Giants have no intention of letting him hit free agency.
Bottom line, because Eli is a top 10 QB and his contract is up means he will certainly become one of the highest paid players in the game, as will any other QB in that class, including Philip Rivers whose teams of representatives is keeping a close eye on Eli’s negotiations. The QB spot is the most important position in all of the major four sports and they get paid that way. Eli will never be as good as his big brother or Tom Brady, but he is about to get paid like he is.
Jerry Reese confirmed that if Brandon Jacobs were to get hurt Ahmad Bradshaw would be the starting RB.
I am excited to see Bradshaw get more touches, every time he touches the ball it seems as though he has a chance to take it to the house. My bold prediction, Bradshaw will have a better career then Reggie Bush, yep I said it. If Jacobs were to go down clearly Bradshaw would share the load with Ware and Brown.
The Giants have released TE George Wrighster and T Mike Fladell.
This leaves TE’s Kevin Boss, Darcy Johnson, Travis Beckum and Mike Mathews on the roster. It most directly affects Mathews who is the teams blocking TE and figures to remain so now that Wrighster is gone. Fladell spent time on the Giants practice squad as a local product from Rutgers.
This wouldn’t be news and notes without mentioning Plaxico Burress. According to ESPN Roger Goodell is initiate a probe to review all incidents involving Burress that fall under the personal conduct policy.
No doubt this will end in a suspension, regardless of what happens in court. Plax’s legal representation is claiming that unless he is found guilty he will not be up for suspension. I suppose Goodell didn’t get the memo and if he did he certainly does not care.
Third round pick WR Ramses Barden signed a 4 year 2.48 million dollar contract, including a 731,000
signing bonus.
Barden is a project and he looked it at OTA’S, struggling to get off the blocks and shake the younger corners. The best scenario is that Barden becomes apart of the goal line unit, but as the Brandon London’s and James Hardy’s of the NFL continue to prove, height isn’t everything (and certainly not Plax’s only attribute). Barden may develop into a standout receiver but it is highly unlikey to happen this year.
Fourth round pick RB Andre Brown signed a four-year, $2.2 million contract. PFT reports the signing bonus as $433,000.
Brown will compete with Danny Ware for the third running back spot. Brown’s deal includes many incentives which he requested. Clearly Brown is confident in his own abilities and is very hungry, not in the Ron Dayne kind of way (ha a fat man joke). Brown was held back at NC State due to injuries, so if he can stay healthy the Giants may have found yet another stud at RB in the later rounds. Brown and Nicks are my favorite picks of this draft, as if you cared….care people, care.
Fifth round pick QB Rhett Bomar singed a four-year contract, including a $185,183 signing bonus.
Bomar will compete with Andre Woodsoon for the 3rd QB spot. Bomar has excellent QB ‘tools,” but lacks Woodson’s accuracy. Still, Woodson had trouble taking snaps in the 4th quarter of a pre-season game, so I think the edge goes to Bomar. The winner will wind up the emergency QB and the loser will go to the practice squad.
According to Ralph Vacchiano, Michael Boley will be out 8-10 weeks after undergoing surgery to repair
a torn hip flexor.
This puts Boley out for all of training camp, which most likely keeps him out of the opener and perhaps even longer. If Boley can’t practice it will be tough for him to pick up a new defense, and have a new coordinator adjust to him. Realistically it may take at least 8 games before Boley can get on the field AND feel comfortable in the defense. Giant fans have to give Boley at least 6-8 games before starting to evaluate this aquisition.
Boley was one of three major free agent aquisitions, so this is a hit, but it also allows players like Gerris Wilkinson and Bryan Kehl to continue to develop (perhaps the last chance for Gerris). Still, with this loss, the line-backing core continues to be the weakest unit on the D….with 700 hundred defensive lineman and an improved secondary it may not matter.
The New York Giants have jumped at the opportunity to add corporate logos to practice jerseys and have struck a deal to add a small Timex patch on their jerseys, according to the New York Daily News.
In conjunction with selling the rights to their practice facility name, Timex and the Giants have teamed up on a $35 million deal that will run for 15 years.
The patch will appear in the left side shoulder of the jersey.
I don’t see a problem with this at all. Practice jerseys are one thing, but if this ever reaches to the game day jerseys, there would be a problem.
Mike Garafolo reports on his blog for the Star Ledger that Giants wide receiver Sinorice Moss will miss the rest of minicamp.
Moss strained his hamstring Tuesday morning. He said it’s not serious and won’t linger into training camp.
“It frustrates me, but maybe I just need to rest my legs,” Moss said.
Coach Tom Coughlin was disappointed to lose Moss while the Giants work on solidifying their wide receiver position.
“It’s unfortunate it’s going to keep him out. He was getting a lot of snaps and he was doing something with them.”
Other injured players include CB Kevin Dockery and rookie RB Andre Brown, DTs Fred Robbins (knee), Barry Cofield (knee) and Rocky Bernard (shoulder), CB Corey Webster (shoulder), LBs Chase Blackburn (hamstring) and Clint Sintim (hamstring), TEs Travis Beckum (hamstring) and Lee Vickers (N/A), WRs David Tyree (hamstring) and Taye Biddle (finger) and OT William Beatty (hamstring).
As per Rotoworld.com, Adam Schefter is reporting that Broncos receiver Brandon Marshall has requested a trade out of Denver.
Marshall is easily one of the most talented young wide receivers in the league. The problem is, he is also one of the most trouble players in the game. While he would be a perfect fit for the height-starved Giants receivers corps, I just can’t see the Giants going fter him on the heels of the Plaxico Burress disaster.
Marshall has compiled at least 1,250 receiving yards and 6 touchdowns on 100 receptions in each of his first two full seasons as a starter. He has also been in trouble with the law and the league on numerous occasions.
He has also been known to drop a pass every now and then, but who among us can say we’ve never dropped a pass in our lives?
