Read: Plaxico Burress Timeline

November 29Plaxico Burress accidentally shot himself in leg at a night club in New York

December 1: Burress is charged with two counts of criminal possession of a weapon.

December 2: Giants place Burress on non football injured list marking the last day we will ever see Plaxico Burress in a Giants uniform.

March 31: Court case adjourned until June 15

April 3: Giants officially release Plaxico Burress

June 15: Court case adjourned again until Septermber 23.

Same day,  agent Drew Rosenhaus tweets “Now that the legal process is on hold, we are hoping to have a deal in place with a team for Plax before training camps start.”

June 26: Commissioner Roger Goodell notified the receiver that he will be reviewing the incidents involving Burress under the personal conduct policy.

plaxico_burressSources say that the commissioner is leaning towards suspending Plaxico indefinitely as well as QB Michael Vick and WR Donte’ Stallworth.

There is still no final decision on what the commissioner will do with Burress and the others. If the verdict is not in Plax’s favor, expect some defiance from him and his lawyers.

As much as Burress wants to play this season, most of the possible suitors for him are backing out. Tampa Bay, Chicago, and the Jets have all but said they do not want any part of the disgruntled receiver.

Agent Rosenhaus says that there are two other teams in contact but there is no inclination as to who they are.

Bill Sheridan: Same Face, New Place

When former Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo decided to take his presence elsewhere and take his coaching to St. Louis, the Giants did not panic. Instead, they hired from within, promoting linebackers coach Bill Sheridan to defensive coordinator.

sheridanSheridan has been in the Giants system since 2005, but the extent of his football experience spans much longer than that. Since 1981, Sheridan has coached on the defensive side of the ball, extensively in college for teams such as Michigan State, Michigan, Army, Cincinnati, and Notre Dame.

Its been a bit of a rocky road for Sheridan since 2005 in regards to the linebackers for the giants…but in a good way. Every year he has dealt with different adversities that caused him to adjust. He did so accordingly and has kept this group of linebackers as one of the better ones during his tenure.

2006: Saw a slew of injuries to players Brandon Short, LaVar Arrington, and Carlos Emmons. Resulted in Antonio Pierce stepping up to be the pro-bowl middle linebacker he is today.

2007: Was instrumental in converting Mathias Kiwanuka from DE to outside OLB where he played very well, recording 47 tackles and 4.5 sacks before getting injured.

2008: Even more tumult arised when Osi Umenyiora went down for the season and took Mathias Kiwanuka away from the linebacking core. Instead, Danny Clark played the OLB position as the Giants ended the season 5th in the league in total defense. Sheridan was also a key component of helping ILB Chase Blackburn convert to the outside and be successful.

Sheridan seems to be the right guy for the job. He knows the players, he knows the system, and he’s been successful with both. This season, he has already been handed the task of dealing with some injuries as Michael Boley, Fred Robbins, and Barry Cofield among others are dealing with injuries that could be nagging come the season opener.

I don’t see any reason why this Giant defense should take a hit in terms of production from this year to last. Spagnuolo was a great coordinator, but Sheridan seems to be up to the task.

Read: Derrick Brooks

d-brooksIn a report from ESPN.com, there is some buzz around the league that the Giants could take a look at perennial pro-bowler Derrick Brooks to help at the weak side linebacker position. With new addition Michael Boley out at least 8-10 weeks and no guarantee of him starting the season on time, a player like Brooks could definitely help shore up an already solid linebacking core.

Behind Boley on the depth chart sits Gerris Wilkinson, Bryan Kehl, and Chase Blackburn.

It’s all good and well to hope that Boley’s hip surgery goes as planned and that he will be ready to go once the season starts; But the fact of the matter is that coming into a season without participating in training camp and playing at the level you are expected to play is easier said than done.

Boley’s a good player, I nor anyone else in the Giants organization doubt that, but why not bring in an aging pro-bowl veteran like Derrick Brooks. He proved last year that he still has some gas left in the tank, and he definitely wants to play.

The New Orleans Saints are also rumored to have interest in the pro-bowler. Returning to Tampa Bay is not out of the question either.

Regardless, Brooks is going to sign somewhere before the sesaon starts, and I can pretty much guarantee that he will make a positive impact wherever he goes.

Rookie TE Beckum 5th Draft Pick to Sign

...posted by Jon Schneider...

09_0626_beckumGiants.com has reported that the Giants have signed 3rd round pick TE Travis Beckum. To make room for the rookie, free agent defensive end Alex Field was waived.

Beckum is the 5th draft pick to sign on, leaving four of the nine draft picks, including 1st rounder Hakeem Nicks, still unsigned.

In 30 games for Wisconsin, Beckum compiled 159 receptions for 2,149 yards and 11 touchdowns. His 159 receptions ranks him 3rd all time in Badger history in receptions behind former Wisco stars Lee Evans and Brandon Williams.

Behind starter Kevin Boss, the Giants are somewhat thin and unproven at the TE position, having just released veteran George Wrightster.

Having two guys who can catch the ball well out of the TE position would be a huge bonus for a Giant team that really has not had that in recent history. Look for the Giants to incorporate some more double TE packages in training camp and the pre-season.

Danny Clark Enrolls in Broadcasting School

in an article for the New York Daily News, Jon Wiener reports on NFL players who attended NFL Broadcast Boot Camp last week in Mt. Laurel, NJ. Of the 24 players in attendance was Giants linebacker Danny Clark.

The rest of the story can be read here, and includes some pretty funny bloopers with Patriots offensive lineman Matt Light and Raiders wide receiver Drew Carter.

Take Clark’s little broadcast boot camp experiment with a grain of salt.  Clark indicated that he still has enough left in the tank, telling the Newark Star-Ledger’s Mike Garafolo, “I’ll be doing broadcast boot camp at NFL Films in Mt. Laurel with some of the best guys in the business to try to set up my next job five-plus years in the future.”

“five-plus years in the future.” Since when do players start preparing for life after the NFL five or more years in advance? Ex-Giant WR Joe Jurevicius was in attendance as well…and I got a feeling this career path is less than five years away for him.

In his first season with the Giants in 2008, Clark put up pretty good numbers, posting 70 tackles and two forced fumbles.

Super Bowl Savior: Tyree Fighting for Roster Spot

...posted by Jon Schneider...

77331464CC025_Super_Bowl_XLEven though its still more than a month away, the most curious subject heading into training camp has to be the clutter at the wide receiver position. It’s not a secret that the Giants will have to make some cuts before the season starts, and Mr. miraculous catch himself, David Tyree could be one of the unlucky ones.

Right now it looks like there are seven receivers competing for spots on the opening day roster. Of those seven players, six of them have four years of NFL experience or less, including two rookies.

And then there’s Tyree, who is in his sixth year. As of now, it doesn’t look like NFL experience is working as an advantage for him.

Tyree told Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger that he plans to really step up his special teams game in order to increase his chances of getting a roster spot. The fact that Tyree missed the whole 2008 season with knee and hamstring injuries is a cause for concern as well.

Philadelphia Eagles: Mark Eckel of NJ.com analyzes the Philadelphia Eagles offensive line for the upcoming season writing, “You know you’re doing well when you can let your two starting tackles — both of whom have gone to a Pro Bowl — leave and get better at the position.”

philadelphia-eagles-logo1The players Eckel is referring to are former LT Tra’ Thomas and RT Jon Runyan. Thomas, who has signed with Jacksonville is being replaced by another pro bowler, Jason Peters, who is seven years younger than the aging Thomas.

Runyan on the other hand has yet to be signed and is just coming off surgery on his knee. He is being replaced at RT by former teammate Shawn Andrews as the Eagles signed older brother Stacy to play at the RG position.

with the signing of Andrews and Peters, the Eagles not only brought in quality players to replace the ones they had to let go, but reduced the average age of their line from 30 to 27. Adding quality and youth…I would say a pretty good off-season for the Eagles and their offensive line.

albant1With OTA’s complete, only one thing stands between the New York Giants and the season opener vs. the Washington Redskins…training camp.

Training camp is set to begin on August 3rd at the University of Albany and finishes up on August 25. This camp marks the first time in NFL history that a training camp will start in August. The team will practice 17 days in that span, including eight double-sessions.

Alike other NFL teams, the Giants look forward to having some legitimate training camp positional battles that can have a big impact on the upcoming season. As we inch closer to the start of camp, I will be previewing some of those crucial position battles including the one on the wide receiver depth chart, and even the interesting vie for the 3rd-string quarterback job between second year QB Andre’ Woodson and rookie QB Rhett Bomar.
