USC linebacker Rey Maualuga was the 2008 winner of the Chuck Bednarik Award, given to the best defensive player in the nation. As a freshman he got himself in a bit of trouble when he was arrested for misdemeanor battery for a fight at a Halloween party.
Maualuga is 6 feet 2 inches, 249 pounds and a lot for offensive lineman to handle. He hits extremely hard and is especially effective inside the box.
Maualuga plays with high intensity and in a 2007 game against UCLA he put a hit on UCLA QB Patrick Cowan that Lou Holtz called “the most violent tackle i’ve seen on a college football field”
Maualuga charged Cowan’s upper-body at full speed (possibly making unpenalized helmet contact) while Sartz, also at full speed, simultaneously collided into Cowan’s back — the loud “pop” sound of the bodily force was heard throughout the stadium and by the television audience.
