Source: Edwards and Boldin Won’t Be Giants

by Anthony De Rosa on April 23rd, 2009 at 4:08 pm

A source close to the Giants reports that the Giants have decided the price for Braylon Edwards is too high and they will not be making a trade for him. The source also said the talks for Anquan Boldin are dead as well. The Giants will look for a receiver in the draft instead.

The Browns, according to sources, want at least a first- and a third-round pick for Edwards and possibly Mathias Kiwanuka The Giants haven’t offered anything more than the second- and fifth-round picks they got in the Jeremy Shockey trade. The Giants seemed unwilling to trade Kiwanuka when that report originally surfaced.

The Arizona Cardinals say they have yet to receive an offer for Anquan Boldin from anyone.

The Giants could be looking at several wide receivers that may be available to them at the draft. Among them are Rutgers’ Kenny Britt, North Carolina’s Hakeem Nicks, Maryland’s Darrius Heyward-Bey, and Ohio State’s Brian Robiskie.

Ralph Vacchiano appeared on SNY’s Daily News Live this afternoon and reminds folks that shortly before the 2004 draft many folks were saying that the deal between the Giants and the Chargers for Eli Manning was dead as well.

Vacchiano sees Hakeem Nicks as a likely pick for the Giants in the draft.

I’m not certain this is etched in stone. We have seen this kind of subterfuge and misinformation strategically placed before. We will know soon enough.

Not saying it’s going to happen or not, but really all these ‘close’ sources are just rumors and/or posturing by the Giants (or whichever teams are involved).

I could easily see Crabtree getting pick by the Browns and them then realizing that hmmm maybe another few picks would be good for a team that needs a lot of help.

Or all the Giants WR are taken by their first round pick and then they offer it up to the Browns for Edwards.

It’s similar to mock drafts – a crapshoot. You don’t know until the time passes.

Though the Browns are crazy to think they can get a 1st 3rd and Kiwi for Edwards from the Giants or anyone. A 1st and 5th maybe, but not all that. I’d do a 1st and 5th….Though the Browns probably will wait to see if there is a player they like at the Giants spot and/or the Giants wait to see if they have a player they like at their spot.

Honestly Edwards is the best bet for WR. He had a down year last year but he is arguably better than Plaxico was. He is almost as tall, just as physical and athletic, and tries harder. Its doubtful a receiver in the draft has a big an impact as he could potentially have, although a good rookie receiver isn’t terrible. Trading a 1st and a 5th, but maybe even a 3rd is definitely worth it when you consider that the 1st would be going towards a receiver anyway so there is no difference in trading the 1st for a receiver or picking a rookie with it and the 3rd/5th round pick is worth it as extra for edwards. Besides the fact that we have around 10 picks and can only sign 6 players.

I believe the G-Men will wait until their pick. If Britt and Nicks (in that order) are offthe board, they make the trade. There will be no LBs worth that pick left. If the get Britt or Nicks they will pursue te talks later. My guess is Edwards is a Giants by June 1. I hope Nicks or Britt is as well.

Also, llok fr Manningham to get a real good look in camp this year. Smith will be the slot receiver on passing downs but will never be a 3 down receiver.

    Can anyone say Smokescreen?

This deal should get done tomorrow and I can’t wait.

There is no way I would give up a 1st and a third in addition to Kiwi. I would trade a 1st and a 4th with a conditional 2-3 next year with no Kiwi or Steve Smith.

If Kiwi is involved, then I would only give up a 2 and a 5th.

    Take it or lose it.
