Rutgers WR Kenny Britt Gets Giant Workout

by Anthony De Rosa on March 28th, 2009 at 2:49 pm

brittcoverRalph Vacchiano on his blog for the Daily News reports that Rutgers wide receiver Kenny Britt will be invited by the Giants for a private workout. The Giants are allowed to have private workouts with an unlimited number of “local” players — players who lived or played college in their designated area. They’re also allowed to bring in 30 non-locals for pre-draft visits (but not workouts).

Draft analysts are predicting that Britt could go between No. 25 and 40 overall. The Giants pick 29th.

The Giants are also set to meet with UConn DE Julius Willams on Monday. He ran a 4.69 in the 40, a 41-inch vertical leap and 36 reps on the bench press (of 225 pounds).

Vacchiano reports that the Giants sent a scout to watch Nevada LB Joshua Mauga He did not participate in the combine because he was recovering from surgery on a torn pec.

Penn State guard Rich Ohrnberger is set to visit the Giants on April 9th.

Northern Illinois DE Larry English and Iowa DE Everette Pedescleaux will workout for the Giants sometime in April.

The Giants recently attended a workout for Georgia CB Asher Allen and were reported to be impressed with what they saw.

Vacchiano reports that RB Danny Ware‘s deal has finally been filed with the NFLPA and reported on the union’s website. It’s a one-year, $460,000 contract.

Rich Ohrenberger is a local product (East Meadow High School on Long Island, which is incidentally where I went to school as well…). He is a great character guy who was a member of the All-Big Ten team and a Third-Team All-American. He would be a good late-round pickup for those reasons, and because his signature in my yearbook would then become the autograph of a Giants player (this is a practice known as pre-name dropping; implying a connection with someone in the hopes that they will one day become famous…).

A lot of Defensive Ends being looked at. I know you can never have enough pass rushers, but is there really room for anothe DE on this roster?

I’ve been saying all offseason we should draft Britt. I think he’d be perfect.

And if we draft a DE I think I’d cry. Seriously, the D-line is good enough.

I don’t understand the fascination with Britt. He has some interesting characteristics you want in a receiver, but he’s certainly not a better player than Crabtree, Maclin, or Heyward-Bey. If the Giants are going to trade picks to move up for a better receiver, then it should be for one of those three mentioned.

Britt is only worth using a second round pick on. The first round pick needs to be used on a receiver who is more of a “sure thing”, not a gamble. So if the Giants don’t trade up and they stay at #29, then the pick should NOT be a reach for Kenny Britt just because he bears a slight physical resemblance to Plaxico Burress. The 1st rounder needs to be used on the “best available player” method, preferably one that fulfills a need at linebacker, or a pick that makes us deeper at a position that could use more depth. The pick for a receiver can probably wait till the second round, where we can still get a decent player because there is good depth available at the WR spot in this year’s draft.

The goal for the Giants is not to replace Plaxico, because there simply isn’t a receiver that is going to do that. It’s doubtful even Crabtree could make an immediate impact with the way the Giants focus on throwing underneath rather than stretching the field vertically with someone other than Plaxico.

The goal for improving the team at WR is to find an adequate replacement for Amani Toomer, not Plaxico, the latter of who is nearly irreplaceable in terms of sheer talent and physical ability. Replacing Toomer with a player like a Nicks or Robiskie would be a huge coup, but if Britt were still available in the 2nd round then of course he should be considered. I’m just not as high on Britt as I am Robiskie, because I’m sick of seeing the Giants drop passes, and Robiskie and Nicks are the kind of sure-handed receivers this team could use to lessen the departure of Toomer.

I’ll give you 5 bucks for that signature, right now. I also liked Penn’s Center, Shipley. He looked good at the Combine.
