Vote: Giants Draft Plan

by Rich Resch on March 25th, 2009 at 11:45 am

With five picks in the first 100 (one first rounder, two second rounders, two third rounders), the Giants will certainly have a lot of options come draft day.  The ten overall picks are likely more than they can afford/ fit on the roster.

We have had some spirited debates in the comments section regarding how the Giants should go about the NFL draft; what position they should target, whether or not they should trade up, etc. Now it is time for the fans to vote on what players they would like to see the Giants target.

The following polls contain players that have a legitimate chance of being on the board for the Giants’ 29th pick (based on an assortment of mock drafts), as well as players that could be obtained in a realistic trade-up scenario.

Scouting reports for many of these players can be found here:

The Saints could once again be a good draft day trading partner…because of the picks they sent to the Giants and Jets, they have no 2nd, 3rd, or 5th round picks in the draft. They also have the 14th overall pick, and they consider Safety, RB, and Outside LB their biggest needs. They can certainly afford to move down in the first round to address any of these needs.
Moving up to 14th overall would certainly give the Giants a chance to land one of Maclin or Heyward-Bay.

The giants 1st and lower 2nd for the 14th overall pick sounds about right.

That is an interesting idea. I would love to get Bey and would certainly trade up for Maclin.

The reason Maclin isn’t in the poll is because out of the 100-something mock drafts I have read, I have never seen him falling to pick 29. He is often projected to go inside the top-10, so the Giants might have to wow a team with an offer to move up high enough to get him.

But if he or Bey are there with the 14th and the Saints are listening, I’d definitely consider it.

Reports suggest that they would go with Harvin if they were to go with the versatile receiver.

If Plax gets just probation, it means we could trade up and take some risks.

Now, why does no one talk about Larry English. I think he would be a perfect fit because I feel he will drop to the top of the second round where Reese could pick him up with the 2a pick. Mayock has him ranked as the fourth best OLB.

I saw one or two reports about Harvin as well, but why would the Giants go after him. I mean yes he can be explosive, but he doesnt seem to be the type of receiver the giants need (with or without Plax). I think Sinorice Moss was supposed to be that guy. Not he hasnt shown anything so im not saying Harvin isnt much better. But the giants are still better off using a guy like Steve Smith in the slot over Harvin. And drafting a bigger receiver that can replace Plax and/or Toomer.

    1.Plax/Hixon/Manningham
    2.Bey/Britt
    3.Steve Smith

Harvin should not be the guy.
