Giants Turned Down Braylon Edwards for Steve Smith

By Anthony De Rosa on Mar 23, 2009, 9:38 am

Ralph Vacchiano at the Daily News reports that according to “The Giant Insider” the Giants asked for Braylon Edwards and the Browns wanted Steve Smith in addition to some draft picks.

It was previously reported that the Browns wanted DE Mathias Kiwanuka. That story was later found to be untrue.

(According to ‘The Giant Insider,’) what really happened happened is that the Giants offered Cleveland the two draft picks they got in the Jeremy Shockey deal (a second and a fifth), and the Browns said they wanted those picks and Smith. The Giants said no to that, according to the story, but offered an alternative of the picks plus Domenik Hixon or Mario Manningham.

At that point the Browns walked away.

The New York Post disputes this report citing “someone familiar with the talks”, that while the Giants had discussions with the Browns, no Giants players were discussed.

So they don’t want Hixon or Manningham. How about Moss?!? ;)

I’m torn about Edwards. Maybe it’s because he was on a poor team last year, but all those drops just don’t equate to helping an inaccurate Eli…

Im so glad they thought about trading Manningham,i think he will be a huge bust.It looks like the Giants dont think he can catch on to the system and are trying to get rid of him while he has some value.
Edwards is a very good receiver that was on a garbage team. The Browns dont have a QB,let alone a QB that is even close to as good as Eli.I believe braylons line was like 53 catches for 840 yards at a 15.9 avg.Now think of those stats if he was on the Giants.
Steve Smith will fill in nicely for Toomer although Amani will be missed.

How can you say Manningham is going to be a bust? Do you know how many WR’s do nothing in their rookie year! Its true that Mario isnt the smartest kid in the world, which makes it totally understandable that he didnt pick up the system in year one. That doesnt mean he’s a lost cause.
This kid is a play-maker….I expect him to take big strides this year, once he gets some confidence, and can just go out there any play.

That said, I would like to see the Giants offer their higher 2nd round pick and their 3rd round pick for Braylon. I think that is fair on both sides.

i totally agree. Manningham was never given a chance to do anything last year so it would be 100% unfair to call him a bust. personally i believe that he’ll be poretty good if given time and could even become a better playmaker than he was in college. He’ll most likely never start for the G-Men but he could still be a weapon if given time to develop. Also, the browns have two QB’s that can and will be decent starters eventually. Anderson showed alot of potential his rookie year (i would know, he was qb on fantasy who took me to the league championship) and once they figure out exactly who their starter is theyll have a good starter and backup once brady has more time to develop. (you are right though, neither are as good as eli). Steve smith shouldn’t and won’t be the starter and i don’t think we should trade for a wr like boldin or edwards. we only have 5000 left on the cap and would have to do some serious reconstructing if we wanted to sign either to a long term deal. I think it would be best if we simply just trade up in the draft and shoot for someone like maclin harvin nicks or briit. i believe that plax will be back next year and i think one of those guys would be a fine replacement for toomer.
