Williams a Goner Too

by David Jacks on March 5th, 2009 at 5:17 pm

According to ESPN safety Roy Williams asked for his release from the  Dallas Cowboys and today they granted that release. Williams was selected in the first round in 2002 and has played in 5 pro bowls. Williams is considered an “in the box safety” with holes in his coverage abilities, but at 28 years old he stillwilliams has life in his legs.

Even with the signing of C.C. Brown the Giants are somewhat  thin and fairly inexperienced at safety. With that said Roy Williams is not the answer. Not only has his coverage skills come into question of late so have his tackling abilities. There is a chance the Giants take another shot at an aging veteran for depth purposes but it is more likely to come through the draft as the Giants seem satisfied with a rotation of Brown, Phillips and Johnson.

Speaking of free agent safeties, James Butler has yet to sign a new contract despite having interest from the Rams, Browns and Niners. Early reports were that Butler would work out a deal with former coach Steve Spagnuolo’s Rams but that has yet to come to fruition. That said, the Giants will not be looking to bring Butler back with Brown in the picture.

How do you feel about picking up William Moore with or late second round pick?

Touchdownmaker I have seen tape of Moore at mizzou and I know Kiper seems high on him. The thing about safeties, which is great, is that they rarely go too early unless they are huge standouts (like williams once was) or a team is desperate. So with that said I don’t think the Giants are in need of using any pick to go after any one position other then wide out, unless the plax situation changes or they make a trade. With that that said (yep double that) Moore is a guy I like and if the giants value him the same way they did phillips he could be a 2nd rounder, but the gmen love their value picks which they have set up beautifully this year with all their depth. Best guy at that spot should be wearing blue. I think I covered all my basis there.

I really like the Safties in the draft, and the beauty is that Moore is being ranked as the third or fourth best option in the draft. Mayock has him third I believe, so I could see another Kenny Philips situation where he drops because of a poor senior year.
