Williams a Goner Too
According to ESPN safety Roy Williams asked for his release from the Dallas Cowboys and today they granted that release. Williams was selected in the first round in 2002 and has played in 5 pro bowls. Williams is considered an “in the box safety” with holes in his coverage abilities, but at 28 years old he still
has life in his legs.
Even with the signing of C.C. Brown the Giants are somewhat thin and fairly inexperienced at safety. With that said Roy Williams is not the answer. Not only has his coverage skills come into question of late so have his tackling abilities. There is a chance the Giants take another shot at an aging veteran for depth purposes but it is more likely to come through the draft as the Giants seem satisfied with a rotation of Brown, Phillips and Johnson.
Speaking of free agent safeties, James Butler has yet to sign a new contract despite having interest from the Rams, Browns and Niners. Early reports were that Butler would work out a deal with former coach Steve Spagnuolo’s Rams but that has yet to come to fruition. That said, the Giants will not be looking to bring Butler back with Brown in the picture.
