Holt Asks For His Release

by David Jacks on March 5th, 2009 at 10:40 pm

Update 1pm ET – After coming home from a show in LA (I live there now) where I sat next to Mindy kellyKaling, who you know as Kelly from “The Office,” I was eating some In and Out Burger, listening to ESPN radio. That first line was thrown in for name dropping purposes and a jealousy factor, c’mon you know you would love some In and Out on the east coast.

But I digress, the host, who i believe to be Jason Smith was emphatic about Torry Holt’s ability to still be a franchise player. This got me thinking, Holt did have a down year, but as I said, the team was collapsing around him. He is 3 years younger then TO, at 32, he has had only 2 years of less then 80 receptions and 1000 yards. Smith then goes on to say Holt would be worth a first day draft pick or, if he gets released, a 3 year 30 million dollar deal. I think Smith is overestimating Holts value at this point in his career, but it begs the question, can Holt still be a number 1?

Many fans keep saying the Giants need a receiver of Plaxico’s stature, for those fans, please leave me a list of 10 players in the NFL who have Plax’s stature and skill set. To me the only 2 guys who are out there and  who match Plaxico is Braylon Edwards and Terrell Owens and I want Owens as much as I want hoof and mouth (which actually seems quite fun -just googled it – can’t get it, as I am not an equine – still I don’t want Owens)

Original Post – According to the St-Louis Dispatch 7 time pro bowler Torry Holt has asked for his release. Holt is due a 1.25 million dollar bonus on March 17th so there is a good chance his request is met.The holtRams were hoping to get a draft pick for Holt but with his bonus looming Holt might just hit the open market. Holt is 32 years old and would be hitting a free agent class that is fairly sparce when it comes to wideouts.

Yes Holt is 32, yes he is slowing down, but last year he had 64 receptions, 796 yards, 12.4 yards per catch and 3 td’s. Those statistics are better then any other Giants reciever in 08, although Plaxico was gone before he even got started. Holt also put up these stats as a coach was fired, a QB was benched and the rams suffered a total offensive meltdown. I think he still has life left in him  but can he still be a number 1? Probably not, and at 6’0” 192 pound he does not have Plaxico’s stature, but as I have stated many times, who does?

So, for the right price, Holt anyone?

Yes please, even if it is to team up with Burress (IF Burress gets off)….

I’d hit it for the right price.

I would really look into Torry Holt. Funny thing is that he would be perfect for any team in our division. He woudl be a great replacement for T.O. in Dallas, he is the perfect for the type of routes that Andy Reid like to run, and Zorn uses the West Coast Offense too.

I hope he signs with an AFC team, if not with us. Like I said before, he doesn’t have the skill set that we are looking for, but he will still bring lots of touchdowns.

If the Rams want a pick, why not offer them one? Say a 5th. There is no way 9 rookies make the team next year anyway.

For the Rams, it’s better than nothing, and for the Giants it ensures them Holt.

    You forgot a few…….
    So thats:
    1.Randy Moss
    2. T.O.
    3. Larry Fitzgerald
    4.Charles Johnson
    5.Braylon Edwards

More than that depending on how ‘set of skills’ is defined.

      Add:
      Andre Johnson
      Brandon Marshall
      Vincent Jackson

Regardless only 2 of the 8ish are available and that is TO and Edwards. And both have their issues.

And there is no reason the Giants need an exact replica of Burress. His asset is that he can catch balls that are high and out reach most DBs. But smaller receivers can use their speed, know how, and arms to get separation. If nothing else having a smaller WR might force Eli to be more accurate.

        Throw in Marques Colston too.

touchdownmaker – I am going to go ahead and say you meant Calvin Johnson and not this guy 2008.

Charles Everett Johnson (born January 3, 1972 in San Bernardino, California) is a former professional American football player who was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the first round (17th overall) of the 1994 NFL Draft. A 6’0″, 202-lb. wide receiver from the University of Colorado, Johnson played nine seasons in the National Football League from 1994 to 2002 for the Steelers, the Philadelphia Eagles, the New England Patriots, and the Buffalo Bills.

AS for Vincent Jackson he may have the size of Plaxico but he has never eclipsed 60 catches. My point is the guys with Plax’s height and abiltiy are very rare…also does it matter if a guy isn’t 6’5 if he catches over 80 balls and has 1000 yards receiving.

I realize giant fans, including myself are concerned with eli not having a “big target” but if a guy gets open the way a boldin/holt can it really shouldn’t matter. And if Eli does in fact need size the Braylon has to be that guy.

I was a little leery of throwing in Jackson and Marshall as they don’t have the track record, but they had good seasons last year. Just saying there are a handful 5-9 guys who can do what Plax does in terms of size, etc. At least I didn’t put Matt Jones on the list. :D

But I agree if a guy can get open ala Boldin or Holt size shouldn’t matter. I’d take Steve Smith in a heartbeat, if I could.

Yes David, I meant Calvin Johnson.

I was thinking about the size of our receiver corp, and it became clear that we don’t have much in the way of size.

Smith, Moss, Manningham, and Hixon don’t give us much size.

Can we please get off HOLT. He is done. As someone who traded for him mid season last year and got absolutely nothing…i know he is done. He plays much better at home (in the dome of st. louis) and does nothing outdoors. he has lost his step. he is so done. hixon is a better player.
Can we just trade up in the draft and draft Heyward-Bey?!?!?
