Giants Draft Options: Wide Receiver
...posted by Rich Resch...
Most Giants fans agree that the two biggest areas of need are at linebacker and wide receiver. Which position is at a higher priority is debatable, but it is certain that the Giants will address these two weaknesses during the offseason. Being that the Giants have three picks in the first two rounds, it is possible that Jerry Reese will decide to plug these holes with rookie players. With the recent first day selections of Aaron Ross, Steve Smith, Kenny Phillips and Terrell Thomas, Reese has shown that he is not afraid to use the draft to fix the team’s biggest flaws.
The draft is still months away (April 25 & 26), but it is never too early to start looking at possible prospects. With questions surrounding the futures of Plaxico Burress and Amani Toomer, it is entirely possible that the Giants could head into the draft with only one receiver over 6 feet (Domenik Hixon). Whether or not Burress and Toomer return, the Giants should look to pick up a tall receiver for the present and future. Let us now take a look at some of the players at wide receiver who will make the most sense for the Giants.
Note: due to the glut of smallish receivers on the roster (Steve Smith, Sinorice Moss, Mario Manningham), prospects under 6′1 will not be considered.

1. Michael Crabtree (Texas Tech) 6-3, 214
Not gonna happen.
2. Darrius Heyward-Bey (Maryland) 6-3, 206
One of the best athletes in the draft, Hey-Bey is rumored to have run a sub-4.3 40-yard dash, is skilled at jump balls and can break tackles. His draft stock could fall due to the fact that his abilities are raw and his stats were hurt by being in a rushing offense. He could be the second receiver taken, or he could fall out of the first round, depending on how he performs at the combine.
3. Jeremy Maclin (Missouri) 6-1, 200
Maclin is the whole package, combining size and speed, and strength. He also has the ability to return punts and kicks effectively. He put up eye-popping numbers in a good college offense. He might not be available by the time the Giants pick in the first round.
4. Kenny Britt (Rutgers) 6-4, 205
While not as fast as Heyward Bey or Maclin, the local boy uses his size to his advantage. He is somewhat inconsistent, is a raw route runner, and rumors are that he may have some attitude problems (but then again, who doesn’t these days?). He looks the part, and would be a solid second round pick.
5. Hackeem Nicks (North Carolina) 6-1, 215
Pretty good size and strength, but only average speed. He showed his amazing hands and focus in making one of the best catches of the year during the Meineke Car Care Bowl.
6. Louis Murphy (Florida) 6-2, 205
Similar to Heyward-Bey in that he has great speed and size, but was underutilized in college. Florida’s offense did not make use of this deep threat, and he was overshadowed by the smaller Percy Harvin. Murphy has a lot of promise and could turn into a second round steal.
Second Day Sleepers:
Ramses Barden (Cal Poly) 6-6, 227
At 6-6, Barden is already a Giant (hahahaha!) His gigantic body would provide a Plax-like target for Eli. He can catch, but has trouble separating due to below average speed.
Darius Passmore (Marshall) 6-3, 188
Good size, good hands, average speed. If he sticks in the NFL, he could go down as one of the most appropriately named players since QB Adam Throwgood and RB Steven Runfast. Just imagine all the hilarious “we need to pass more to Passmore” jokes.

This draft is deep at wide receiver, so it is possible that teams will pass on some of the top-tier prospects, knowing that there will be other quality receivers later in the draft. I would like to see the Giants go after Heyward-Bey, who I think has the highest upside, or Kenny Britt, whose body type makes him a perfect future replacement for Plaxico Burress.
What do you think the Giants should do with their three first-day picks? Are there any receivers you’d like to see them go after that I have not mentioned? Don’t be afraid to share your opinions.

Lets just hope whichever receiver they pick is the #2 guy playing behind #17……if we need to rely on one of these guys (outside Crabtree of course) to be an elite receiver right away, we will be in trouble…
Need Plax AND one of these guys…..height becomes less of an issue with Plax back in the picture
i was listening to the radio this morning and they made a good point
even if plax doesn’t get jail time…the nfl will most likely suspend him for some portion of the season…so regardless…you have to go into the off-season/draft thinking like plax won’t be there
Well I wonder if the NFL will look at the 4+ game suspension Burress got from the Giants as part of a suspension.
Giants are one of the few teams that took a proactive approach to punishing their players, while not waiting for the NFL league office to react.
that’s a really good point!
i didn’t think about that…that would be interesting…and really work out in our favor…if plax can come back, pick up another guy like him in the draft, with hixon and smith developing, and moss and manningham waiting to get their chance…that would be great
You speak the truth, Moze. I would feel a lot more comfortable with Plax and one of these guys. In that case, in a couple of years when Plax is no longer with the team, whichever guy we choose would then have the height to take over as the #1 to fill out a talented core along with Hixon, Smith and Manningham, (none of them wearing the retired #81). In a perfect world…
I vote taking a LB #1, then hopefully pick up Kenny Britt with the first 2nd round pick for WR, then maybe a O-Lineman with the #3 (2nd-2nd round pick)
Britt can catch man…and his strength makes him tough to tackle in the open field…and while not lightning fast, he doesn’t need to be
plus he is local!
where did you hear about this “bad attitude” stuff? is there an article on it anywhere?
Here are a couple of articles that deal with Britt’s attitude concerns.

thanks rich!
hmm…seems like he’s got all the potential in the world and just needs maybe the right environment to adopt the right attitude…
do you think the giants and coughlin are a good fit to “fix” his attitude?
if i am not mistaken, and correct me if i am wrong, didn’t bradshaw’s value drop a lot b/c of his “attitude”? i’d say he’s adapted a pretty decent one now…
what are your thoughts?
Coughlin and the Giants are as good a team/coach as any for a young player with attitude problems, but at what point do you limit the players with character issues? You don’t want the locker room to be taken over with these personalities like the Dallas locker room. If you bring back Burress and draft Britt, they form a trio with Manningham of players who have had documented attitude problems at a position known for prima donnas. Not that I think the Giants’ locker room will ever resemble this year’s Cowboys disaster, but it’s something to think about before drafting Britt.
I would prefer they go after Heyward-Bey (I went to Maryland and got to watch him play for two years so I may be biased). I like his skill set and positive attitude. Most of the mock drafts I’ve seen have him being off the board before we pick however, with Britt available for our first second round pick.
Bradshaw did fall due to worries about his attitude, but he also had a couple run-ins with the law, including stealing a Playstation game from a dorm room. As far as I know, Britt has never had any legal trouble; he is just thought to be a prima donna. I could see him falling a bit if he runs a slow 40-yard dash. The same thing happened to Anquan Boldin when he ran a 4.7 40, and he fell to the end of the 2nd round.
hmmm interesting…i agree i’d like to see Heyward-Bey get picked by us, I just figured he might not drop down to our pick…
you think they will take a LB or WR in the 1dt round? I would think whatever they take first, the other position they would do 2nd as most of the mock drafts have them doing
thanks for writing back and providing those links too!
Thanks for the comments.
It’s still very early to guess which position we’ll go after in the first round, and a lot of it might depend on who is available and whether we sign any FAs (which also depends on who gets franchised). We might be able to make a better prediction after the combine, but history tells us that there will be some unforeseen curve balls to mess everything up. Who knows, we may end up drafting a defensive lineman in the first round again.
If I had to make a guess, I’d say LB in the first round (Clint Stintim would be nice) and WR in the 2nd (Britt or Hicks, maybe?). But my guess is as good as anyones right now.
ramses barden is amazing…
not second day material
hes at most 3rd round
Thanks for the comment. I think he’ll go around the third round, which is now the second day. Goodell changed the first day of the draft so that it is only two rounds.
I went to Clemson, so I have to throw this out there…..watch out for Aaron Kelly. The kid is one of the top WR in ACC history, but coming from a rush oriented offense, so you don’t hear a whole lot about him.
