And you’re a Fan Why?

Reader So Dev wrote this in one of my comment sections and it got me thinking:
“On a side note this reminds me to thank all that is good in this world that when I was about 5 my favorite color was blue and not green… *shutters to think*”
At the age of 5 a simple love of the color blue made him into a Giant fan. I fear if I ever have a son, in a sports karma like way, he will enjoy Philly cheese steaks, love playing the Indian (in Cowboys and Indians) and doodle blue stars. If he likes singing yankee doodle dandy I will cut myself.
Let’s get in that sharing circle again and find out why you all became fans of Big Blue. If you’ve got a good story or just want to share…GO.
Personally I was 8 years old in 1986 and the Mets and Giants won it all, so I guess you could say I am an original bandwagon fan. Although, I have never left one of my teams. I do wonder if my life would be better had I simply loved pinstripes, and then I think of nails, mookie, carter, knight, doc, alfonzo, straw, keith and reyes and I punch myself in the face for having such pathetic thoughts.

I became a Giants fan based on my family. But the love for them grew from the way my father and family members woudl talk of them playing the game the right way. The hardnose running attack along with a kick butt defense. And that is why these past few season have worked me to a nostalgic level since this current team seems like they are straight from that tiem period.
Also does anyone have clarification on the Shock trade. I know there was an issue with the Vilma trade and them getting the 2nd round pick if Vilma plays like 85% and something else. it seems like he did that. So do we get the 2nd and 5th this year or a first next year. If we dont know yet what are the stipulations?
Thanks and go GMEN
To clarify, yes the gmen get the 2nd and 5th round pick. The chance of getting the 1st round pick was almost laughable, the saints would have had to make awful decisions and they didn’t. I believe the pick is the 14th overall in the second round.
That is right, so we are looking at 3 inside the top 64 or 2 inside the top 50. *wood*
I was born in NYC and came from a family of divided sports loyalties. My mom and her side of the family supported the Giants/Yanks/Rangers/Knicks, whereas my dad and his side of the family supported the Jets/Mets/Rangers/Knicks.
My grandfather on my mom’s side lived with us for most of my childhood, though, and his passion for his sports teams was unmatched. Watching games with him while growing up ensured that I would bleed blue and pinstripes for life. (My dad is more of a casual sports fan, whereas all my grandpa did was watch sports.) I’m just grateful that he lived with us during my formative years, or I could be a Jets fan first right now. Scary thought.
For what it’s worth, though, I don’t hate the Jets/Mets like a lot of Giants/Yanks fans seem to do.
I grew up in a Military family so I had no ‘Home’ Team.
For me, it started with baseball. I am 29 years old now, so I was it was around 1984-1985 that I started liking the sport. I found out there was a player with the last name Strawberry (like the fruit!!) and became a Mets fan.
A couple of years later, I learned about football and had a bunch of friends who were Chicago Bears fans since they were good. Well, I couldn’t do that. I found out the Giants were also pretty good and have stuck with them ever since. I consider myself a Die Hard fan of both and the tears will come when each of them win the big one (and occasionally when they lose the big one)…sob…and thats my story!
FYI:
Detroit Red Wings (Fast skaters in EA Sports NHL 92 – Federov and Yzerman). I do have a little love for the Islanders since my goalie Osgood headed over there.
Orlando Magic (Hardaway and Shaq), but i’m pretty much Anti-Bandwagon for any team that is consistently good.
I was like Jose, military family, no hometown/team.
As stated blue has been my favorite color since I can remember. I wasn’t a Giants fan at 5, it was just part of the chain of events that lead me there. All my family was from Jersey and my uncle was is a big Giants fan to this day. I’m sure that had influence on me. My dad never pushed a team towards me and that Giant Blue of the 80’s was so crisp. I barely even remember ages 5-12, so who knows what year I actually became a Giants fan, but it was before the Norwood kick because I remember sitting on the steps watching my dad an his friends chill… I just cared about the game.
I have a 2 yo boy who has some Manning jerseys… he will be ‘led’ in the right direction. ; )
David,
I don’t think you can be a bandwagon fan at 8. I think that is how it happens sometimes. I’m sure the 07 Giants have many kids dreaming at night.
It all started when I saw the movie “The Little Giants” (I’m 19 now) and I have never stopped loving the Giants or hating the Cowboys since.
lol, jws… that’s great!
“don’t be talkin’ bout my momma!”

Movies is classic, gonna have to get it for my boy to watch. =D
When I was about 6 in 1981 I discovered football and Mean Joe Green. But alas my love of the Steelers was short lived, due to not being able to watch them much, and by the age of 10 I was bleeding blue. Just in time too as they won the SB a year later.
But thanks to the internet I’ve been able to see my Steelers alot more now. Still waiting for my dream SB, Giants .vs Steelers. Maybe this year.
