Where were you when…

by David Jacks on December 30th, 2008 at 2:36 pm

If anyone has a good story or just wants share  where they were when David Tyree made the single greatest catch in Super Bowl history we at GiantsFootballBlog would love to know.  Now lets form a circle  hold hands and share.

Personally I was sitting on my couch with my buddy Ben (die hard  fan- I couldn’t fathom having anything but Die hards at my place for such a big game ) My buddy Gshep was forced to stand behing the couch for this very reason; He  stood up behind the couch to get a beer the moment Kevin Boss made that 45 yard grab, we made him stay there the rest of the game.

There is no doubt in my mind that Gshep and all the other crazed Giant fans, doing there crazy rituals, helped David make that miraculous catch. For the record this is the same Gshep who fell 6 rows at Shea after Mike Piazza hit the game winnning home run in the post 9-11 game. The single most dramatic moment I ever had a Shea all ruined (or as stewey would say rueeened) by my buddy flying 6 rows in the air in slow motion. That’s right it happened in slo mo.

I was at my Pops house where I usually watch my football (he is a Skins fan) so he just sat there in awe of the Giants amazing playoff run… I remembering him being very quiet the whole game.

I was standing almost the whole game… I barely remember watching wide right (I was 12) as I watched my Dad and his friends watch the Giants win SB XXV. I’ve waited 17 years for this, this SB was mine!

The 1085 catch… it was the second most amazing thing I’ve ever seen. Eli to Plax in the corner took me down one knee with a strong joyous “YES!”, the sheer joy I felt at that moment was amazing… I was absolutely high! It was so surreal!

Eli’s escape and Tyree”s catch were outstanding. I just remember saying… “he caught it!” “I think he caught it!”, but nothing feels as good as taking the lead.

We took “The Drive” and “The Catch” on that day. When the Pats scored to take the lead I looked at my Dad with a grin and said “Could you ask for a better setup?”

I’ll be honest. To me, this year was about justifying last year… engraving it forever even more than it already was. We took the word fluke and shoved it so far back down the throats of everyone who ever mentioned it that they should get the runs just thinking about it… 12-4, division winners, #1 seed… mission accomplished!

Shit guys, Superbowl this year is just a bonus! Kick back and enjoy! ; )

I was in my apartment in Somerville, MA (just outside Boston). A few months earlier I listened to Sox fans go wild after their WS win. I dropped to my knees and yelled when he made that catch, but what was even better was hearing the silence in Boston after the game when I took my dog for a walk with both of us wearing Giants jerseys. I couldn’t resist, I had to break the silence by yelling “NY Giants Superbowl Champions!!!”

Blue – That last part about taking the dog for a walk with the Jerseys on is so freaking awesome! =D

I was half way across the world. I live in Denver, but was out of the country. A few fellow Giants fans and I usually watch all the games together at each others homes or at a sports bar…..

But it was Super Bowl time and I couldn’t watch it. I wasn’t in a big city and the game started at 4:00am where I was….All I did was to ask one of my fellow Giants fans to text me updates….

I got an update right before half, but never again. I had no idea what was happening. I texted them, but never heard back. I felt like it had to be bad, really bad.

Well about what I estimated as 30 minutes after the game ended, I finally got a text saying the Giants won via a pass to Buress. No mention of the Tyree catch *shakes fists at friends*. Later that day, I finally caught highlights on some weird TV station that I couldn’t understand. And that is when I first saw the Eli to Tyree throw and catch. . . . . . . .I now have watched the Super Bowl about 10 times in its entirety (thank you Tivo) and the final 10 minutes about 50 times. :D

So I was in the middle of nowhere with little detail on how the Giants pulled out of the greatest upsets in Super Bowl history and played one of the greatest games ever.

Good stuff Koko. Must have been tough, but at least it had a happy ending!

    = D

Thanks and yes it did. It was tough….Honestly I watched the Tampa Bay game but I didn’t have huge confidence that the Giants would get to the Super Bowl, let alone win it.

But the night that I left I had just watched the Giants beat the Cowboys……I started to believe even more and was depressed the entire flight that I was going to miss the Green Bay game.

I happened to be in a city for that game, but only caught updates via game tracker and websites…..And once I saw that they won I was ecstatic and sad at the same time, knowing that the Giants were going to the Super Bowl, but I wasn’t going to be around to watch it.

But at the end the outcome and the sheer enjoyment still live with me….Even now when I rewatch the game/play I get chills.

I remember it like it was yesterday…..I was at my house in Jersey, me and 10 friends drove from my college in PA to my house where my parents were holding a big Superbowl Party of aout 40 people…..I picked my spot on the couch with my friend Matty to my immediate left(just as it had been for every playoff game). Now you talk about superstitions, Matty has a rotation of 3 Jerseys if somethign bad happens one goes off and the other goes on until we find the right combination…..So we are sittin on the couch and my da djust bought a new 70 inch HD TV and the 40 people are scattered around my family when Eli was abouut to be taken down a collective “Oh F***” come from about 39 of the 40 people and 1 Pats fan rose up and started cheering and then all of a sudden Eli escapes and EVERYONE stands up willing this ball to find an open Giants reciever and you see Tyree make this catch and as SoDev said 40 people turned to eachother and was askign did he catch it? it was a catch!!! I think it touched the ground no catch and when we relised he caught 39 peopel stood up cheering loudly and one lonely Pats fan was sitting hands in head and for the rest of the game no one sat down and the rest is history…Truly the best game I ever witnessed….

I was having my usual Super Bowl party with 8 or 9 Giants fans…..and one Cowboy fan. I have a digital projector I set up for this game but it was over heating so we moved to another room with a 65″ HD. Nicer picture but watching life-sized plays projected on the wall is surreal.

My wife doesn’t sit still for very long and we noticed that when she was in the room, the Giants didn’t seem to move the ball very well but the Pats did. After the Pats took the lead late in the game, my wife was banned from watching any live plays. She would run up the stairs just before the snap and run back down to watch the replay. The guys were screaming after each play and my wife was running a marathon. Both the guys and my wife believed it would be the formula to a victory.

After the Giants took the lead, everyone felt safe and my wife was with us as the clock ticked down to zero. Is she the greatest or what?

First, a thanks to Mr. Jacks for starting this post and for entertaining me this season. Well done Sir!

You all have great stories, let me add one.

As last year’s season came to it’s improbable end, I found myself on a transcontinental flight, missing the final regular season game. While seemingly unimportant we have all learned/speculated that is was indeed the springboard to the Superbowl run. As soon as my flight touched down, my Patriots fan friend and I had a Blackberry race to the score. I informed him that Tom Brady had been killed (not true) to which he retorted “16 and 0!” Revenge is sweet.

Let me start by saying that I am not a superstitious guy by any means, but over the past few years I have watched many a game with the oldest Giants fan I know, my grandpa. Not many 83 year old men know the game like he does, despite his obsession with the blitz. “You gotta blitz the quarterback.” He fails to understand that you can’t blitz every play, but I digress.

Gramps and I had been on quite the hot streak and I was determined not to be responsible for a Jints loss. I also had taken to a certain “uniform” that had been serving me well. (note: I was not wearing this during the reg season finale)

After watching every playoff game with Gramps there was no question where I’d be come Superbowl. With my other Jints-fan cousins (my Grandpa’s other grandsons) flying in and driving in to Grandpa’s house we gathered for the big game. It was a small gathering, but hey it was family.

Now, I have to take a minute to throw Gramps under the bus here. You see, my Grandmother innocently invited friends over the night of the SB and she wouldn’t cancel the plans. We shamed him for not man’ing up, but he picks his battles. Gramps was back and forth between rooms all night, but had the game on despite his company.

The rest is history and I’ll never forget that fateful night. I will cherish the fond memory of watching the Jints win it all with my Gramps and family. Sorry for the sappiness.

Anyways for a taste of our celebration, check out:
