Spotlight On The Receivers Now
...posted by Peter Wade...
The story for the rest of this Giants season might now be all about the Giants receivers. This may not go away. If this group, as a whole, does well then they will hear how they overcame the Plaxico Burress fiasco but if the offense struggles or even if it is the defense that happens to struggle there will be some who place the blame on an offense that might not be pulling their weight. Bottom line, the spotlight is on them now. Yes, there is a ton of talent elsewhere on this squad that may lessen the pressure but it is a test, no doubt about that. More passes will come there way and more media attention will come with it. It will interesting to watch how this plays out.
With that said here I go writing about the Giants receivers. Yesterday Steve Smith spoke about getting help up at gun-point:
“I was definitely shaken,” Smith said. “I can’t really speak on that right now because it’s an ongoing investigation but it was scary.”
“First time,” (he’s ever been in that situation) he said. “You see it happen to people, but you never think it’s going to happen to you until it does.”
Also yesterday, the man who may end up filling Burress’ shoes, not just now but in the future, Domenik Hixon talked to Burress before he left. Hixon had nothing but good things to say about his fellow receiver and spoke about what Burress said to him:
“He started coaching me up,” Hixon said. “As soon as I saw him we started talking about releases and what to expect going up against Philly this weekend.
“That’s a teammate. He has personal issues going on right now but he still wants to coach and help somebody out so to me that says a lot about his character and trying to help somebody out during his trying times.”
Hixon also spoke about his expanded role and how defenses will be different without Burress in there:
“It’s an opportunity,” Hixon said. “You never want anything bad to happen to friends who we consider family, but it’s an opportunity and you’re asked to do a job so you have to go out there and do your job.”
“They (opponents) rolled a lot of coverage [Plaxico's] way and a lot of double teams and things like that so they may try to single us up and try to do something different,” Hixon said.
Speaking of Hixon I saw this clip yesterday of Hixon making a game winning TD catch when he was at Akron that I thought was cool. Enjoy.

Great post, Pete. Coughlin really had a lot of good things to say about Hixon during training camp. It is now time for him to show he can step up and seize the opportunity.
