Plaxico Accidently Shoots Himself

By Anthony De Rosa on Nov 29, 2008, 12:07 pm

Jay Glazer at FoxSports.com is reporting that Plaxico Burress shot himself in the thigh and he spent the night in the hospital. The wound is not considered life-threatening, according to the reports.

ESPN is reporting that Burress sustained the gunshot wound while in a night club, citing multiple sources. John Clayton of ESPN is reporting that Plaxico was carrying the gun and it went off unexpectedly.

Burress has a permit for a concealed weapon in Florida that expired in May but even if it was still valid, that license is not recognized in New York and Burress could be facing a gun charge.

The team just landed in Washington and Mike Garafolo at the Star Ledger spoke with a Giants player who said “He is okay, that’s all I can say.”

Plaxico was already expected to be inactive for Sunday’s game with a hamstring injury. He is very likely to face disciplinary action on top of the time he may miss from the gunshot wound. Domenik Hixon should see additional time in his absence.

Burress signed a five-year, $35 million contract this fall.

In September, Burress was fined one week’s salary — $117,500 — and suspended for two weeks (one of them the bye week) after missing a team meeting. Police were summoned to his home twice during this past summer for domestic disputes with his wife, Tiffany. He was also fined $45,000 by the NFL for incidents during and after a 49ers game where he questioned the officiating and threw a ball into the stands following a touchdown.

This guy is a total mess. He finds new and crazier ways to miss practice or game time every day.

It takes a lot of work to make Chad Johnson and Terrell Owens seem stable in comparison.

He shouldnt get his salary just like when Kellen WInslow crashed his motorcycle and Monte Ellis wiped out on a moped.

He should be definitely put on reserve non-football injury list .. Lets give Sinorice and Manningham some burn.

Nice excuse to cut him and save the bonus money.

Didnt Winslow have a clause in his contract that said he was not allowed to ride a motorcycle?
Did Plax have a clause that he could not own a gun? I don’t know.

I have now spoken with 6 friends/ 1 reporter about the accidental shooting, all 7 of them mentioned cheddar bob, a comparison you surely do not want.

As for what will happen next the speculation is all too early. Tom rock of newsday says it does not appear to be life or career threatening but he wonders if it is Giants career threatening, it may be.

I believe the gmen are better with him playing, but all of the off the field issues can no longer be ignored. I think Moss and Manningham are now going to be thrust into the offense, but most of all Hixon will have to continue to play well. What scares me most is this question; have the Giants lost a big playmaker on offense? Other then week 1 plax really hasn’t been the guy, so what are the Giants losing? I expect teams to load up in the box to find out, although I expected this with or without plax come cold weather.

Absolutely mind boggling. This all gives me a little deja vu to a time last year when Jeremy Shockey became injured. Although the records are not parallel i see Plaxico as a similar distraction, that if avoided will help the Giants in the long run. I mean they are 10-1 and he has 35 rec. I mean he is not Andre Johnson who does that in 3 consecutive games. I think with all the receiving talent the Giants have the void of Burress can easily be covered. The only thing the Giants will miss is the height Burress brought, and also the threat in other teams game plans, because they would need to alter their plans just because of him. This was the same with Shockey though and we all know how last years playoffs ended.

I just want to say “I told you so”. He never should have been given that ridiculous contract extension. Unbelievable.
