postGame: Giants 37 Cardinals 29

By Rob Harding on Nov 23, 2008, 8:14 pm

Without the services of their two stars, Brandon Jacobs and Plaxico Burress, the Giants prevailed and defeated the Arizona Cardinals by a score of 37-29 in Glendale.

Eli Manning was on his game today, and needed to be, without the power horse behind him in Jacobs. Manning threw for 240 yards and 3 TDs. Derrick Ward got the bulk of the work at RB today, running for 69 yards on 20 carries, and a TD. It just goes to show you how much the Giants missed Jacobs as they rushed for only 87 yards as a team.

The Giants secondary did a great job of containing the trio of Fitz, Breaston, and Boldin today. Boldin had 11 catches, but only had 87 yards, 7.9 per catch. Warner was kept off balance by the blitzing of Steve Spagnuolo and the Giants defense. Kenny Phillips led the team with 7 tackles, and Terrell Thomas picked off a Warner pass to seal the deal for the GMen. On the sour side, Aaron Ross was tagged with four penalties this afternoon. Ouch.

Not to be ignored are the efforts of WR/KR Domenik Hixon, who set up many Giants drives with his kick return prowess. He had 180 yards on 3 kick returns, and also had 6 catches for 57 yards filling in for the injured Burress. Speaking of Plax, he was in uniform, but left after the first drive after aggravating his hamstring injury.

The Giants maintained their three game lead in the division over the Skins and Cowboys, and travel to Washington to face off against those Redskins next Sunday. Gametime is set for 1:00 on FOX.

Maybe a bit of an overstatement, but I don’t think the game was as close as the score indicated.

And it comes down to what Ross was called for. He had a tough assignment, but at least 2 of the 4 PI calls were bad. The one in the end zone against Fitz for sure and the one where it looked like it might be a late hit penalty on Phillips, but ended up being a PI on Ross.

Anyway nice win! Another big game against the Redskins.

No easy games for the Giants, that is for sure.
