Is Brandon Jacobs the NFL’s Best RB?

By Rich Resch on Nov 17, 2008, 3:24 pm

In Sports Illustrated’s “For The Record” blog, Andrew Perloff argues that Brandon Jacobs is the best running back in football.

“The Giants immediately set the tone for a game when Jacobs comes out there and knocks the defense onto its back heels like Walter Payton or Earl Campbell used to do.”

…this coming from a guy who said that Philly has the best fans in all of sports…

I’m not sure I agree with his Brandon Jacobs claim, although it is not a ridiculous statement. While his 879 rush yards ranks him 4th in the NFL, he has done it with far fewer carries than the guys in front of him. Jacobs has averaged 5.4 yards per attempt on 164 carries. No one else with 160 attempt or more has averaged even 5 yards per carry. Jacobs is tied for the league lead with 11 rushing touchdowns. It also doesn’t hurt that Jacobs is playing behind the best offensive line in the NFL.

What I am sure of is that I wouldn’t trade him for any other running back in football.
