Coach Coughlin Speaks

By Anthony De Rosa on Oct 16, 2008, 5:01 pm

Q: When was O’Hara released from the hospital?

A: This morning.

Q: How did he look out there?

A: Good. He did well. He practiced, he took every snap. He did a good job.

Q: Was it frightening for you to have him in the hospital?

A: Well, he was hospitalized because they wanted to make sure they got the infection taken care of right away without any lingering problems. So that is why they did. And they kept him an extra day, to be honest with you.

Q: Could you clarify the kicking situation?

A: No. At the end of the week I will do that, just like I always do.

Q: Why would Tynes…… where did he get that idea?

A: I have no idea. Did you read my statement?

Q: I did see it.

A: That’s all I’m saying.

Q: You always talk about cornerbacks having a short memory. Have you seen that from Aaron Ross so far?

A: I have. I have seen him — obviously he is — but you have to move on; you have to move on. And he is in a position where the ball comes. And a lot of times it is one-on-one. And you certainly want to win the majority of your battles, but when something does happen, then you have to put it behind you. There is nothing you can do about it now except learn from it and get better. And that is what we are trying to do.

Q: Was there anything specifically that was a consistent issue with his play the other night?

A: Not necessarily.

Q: How has the team responded at practice this week?

A: Today was better than yesterday. And they are getting it back up.

Q: You guys are thinking about putting stuff behind you. It is easier said that done sometimes. What have you seen that tells you that they are ready to move on?

A: Just exactly what I just said. Today was better than yesterday. And hopefully tomorrow will be better than today.

Q: When you play an offense that spreads the ball around with an injury to a linebacker can you substitute a safety into that role?

A: It depends on the situation, the circumstance, the personnel on the field; that type of thing.

Q: How did David Tyree look?

A: He has looked fine. He has had some good energy and he is excited obviously to be back out there.

Q: At some point a decision will have to be made about his roster spot?

A: We will make that at the right time.

Q: You have a lot of receivers already on the roster?

A: It is a good issue.

Q: Do you think when he is eventually healthy he will still have the same kind of impact on special teams?

A: Oh I think he will be — when the time comes I think he will be every bit the football player that he has ever been.

Q: What is his sense of being back on the field?

A: Just exactly same thing he said over and over was, ‘I’m certainly glad to be on the field. I’m very tired of standing around watching.’

Q: Anything different with Cleveland’s blocking schemes in terms of neutralizing your pass rush?

A: No, not necessarily.

Q: Just a matter of execution?

A: As all people do, they kept some people in there and max protected some, but you see that all of the time.

Q: Have you seen any changes across the board totally since the start of the season after what you guys did last year about how they are blocking…?

A: Nothing different than what you normally see; the chipping, the opportunity, if you will, to not allow any one rusher to be isolated, to have more than one person, if you can, looking for work, to help. Whether it be a back or whether it be a tight end, whatever.

Q: How is Antonio Pierce?

A: He didn’t work.

Q: Have you seen teams trying to get the ball out more quickly with a three-step drop back in the passing game?

A: It is a mix. It is a good mix. They started the game with a couple of three steps and then they eventually blocked some max protection up in play action. It is a mix, they ran some boots, some nakeds.

Q: Does San Francisco do a lot three step drops and get the ball out?

A: Well, I think they are capable, yeah.

Q: Do you think it will be a pretty smooth transition with Bryan Kehl at linebacker because of the experience he had earlier?

A: Bryan played a lot the other night. So he certainly has had some time on the field. He played pretty well. He did have some tackles and mixed it up in there. He has been on the field.
