Eli Has Chest Injury, Severity Unknown

By Anthony De Rosa on Oct 14, 2008, 3:55 pm

Eli Manning hurt his chest when he was slammed to the ground by Browns DT Shaun Rogers on a third-and-6 completion to Plaxico Burress with 10:16 left in the second quarter. Eli never missed a snap in the game, but was bothered by the injury, Mike Garafolo reports in the Star Ledger.

Rogers, who weighs 350, hit Manning and then drove him into the ground, with all of his weight falling on him.

“He got hit and when he was driven into the ground … his chest was bothering him after the game,” coach Tom Coughlin said on a conference call minutes ago. “He was in some pain there. But I don’t have any information other than that today. He was in the training room and we’ll see.”

Manning didn’t disclose the injury during the game and is currently undergoing tests. Coughlin couldn’t confirm if he would miss time.

Coughlin was asked about his concern.

“I’m not going to know until I hear some things,” he said. “From time to time, for anybody who plays that position, you’re going to have some things that don’t allow you to perform at your best. Injuries do occur. I don’t know whether this is (an injury) or not. Eli has played very well with soreness and that type of thing. I’m sure that’s something he’ll be able to go ahead and practice and play with but we’ll see. As I said, I don’t have a lot of information now.”

Other injuries in the game were LB Gerris Wilkinson, who suffered a mild MCL sprain in the game, S James Butler with a biceps injury and LB Antonio Pierce tweaked his quad.

Hat tip again to the always informative Jordon.

I personally have not seen the Giants O-Line get so abused by one person in a while. I mean they could not stop Rodgers and were forced to double team him. This allowed many open holes to Eli. I cannot say im surprised he was injured.

I agree on how the Giants o-line didn’t look like the same group they have all year. However, I feel that the key factor in this game was the giants defensive line. The Giants gave Anderson all the time in the world to find his receivers despite having the Browns get into deep holes do to penalties. Because the pass rush was nonexistent, the Browns were able to keep the chains moving, and keep the Giants defense on the field.

This is true, and Anderson was inaccurate, yet we still did not force a single turnover, also due to a lack of pressure by the D-Line. Also they did not blitz with their linebackers as well as they normally do, I think that made a huge difference.

If any of you have that game DVRed, I’d like you to watch it again and pay closer attention to the rampant holding that was going on all game. There were more than a few plays that went for a lot of yardage where the closest Giant who could have made a play early was held badly. Without the refs calling them on it, they just continued to hold all night.

With that said, I’m not making excuses for them. They flat out played badly.

Also, that play where Eli got hurt was flat out dirty. There was no need for him to get driven into the ground the way he did.
