According to Pro Football Talk, Tony Gonzalez has requested a trade from Kansas City, and the Giants may be a possible fit.
Gonzalez, 32, holds the record for career receiving yards by a tight end. He is on pace for his worst season in ten years, thanks mostly to the Chiefs’ inept offense.
The Giants would be a logical destination due to their lack of production from the tight end position, but there are a dozen teams that could benefit from acquiring Gonzalez. Although I’d be for Gonzo at the right price, these NFL deadline rumors usually do not materialize.
The NFL trade deadline is Tuesday, October 14.
…Update…6:15 PM…
The Kansas City Star has confirmed that the Chiefs are shopping Gonzalez. They speculate that Kansas City would ask for a high-round draft pick in return for the veteran’s services.
…Update…10:30 PM…
The story from the Kansas City Star in the above link now claims that the Chiefs requested a third round pick, while the Giants were only offering a sixth-rounder.
Hat tip to “BiggieSmalls” for the update.

this move could really put the giants over the hump as a real favorite for the super bowl.
Probably wont happen, but this would be a BIG move. On top of his obvious talent, Gonzalez would be a huge asset in the red zone, where we still have trouble.
Giants should inquire about Gonzalez, he would fit like a glove with this team on offense. I wonder if Eli would be intimidated by him but deep down I believe Eli is on another level now. I do believe the G-Men hold the Saints 2nd rounder. Its possible Jerry Reese could trade the pick he got for Shockey to KC for Gonzalez.

If the best we can offer is a 6th rounder for Tony G, then i’ll be very upset. Maybe not worth a 3, but i’d definitely give a 4 and a 5/6.
a 4 sounds fair seeing as he is 32 years old and has 10 plus years in the league.
Another thing is his $$ Due. I hear he is only making 1 mil this year but it escalates to $4M in 2009, 4.5 in 2010 and then in 2011 it jumps up to $5.75M.
i know we can always cut him but thats a nice piece off the cap. Not sure how it would affect the signing of Jacobs and our other young FAs.
Reese should give up a fourth rounder for sure. If only the Saints had waited a little, they could have had Gonzalez instead of Shockey.
I am not sure how much of an impact Tony Gonzalez would make in our offense. Gilbride does not use the TE much. The TE mostly blocks in our offense, with the surprise pass rout that catches the defense with their pants down.
How about a great big “No thank you”.
If they could have stolen him for a 6th rounder, fine. Otherwise we do not need to start getting older, and overpaid.
I have no complaints about the way this season is going, but if someone really thinks that lack of production out of the TE position is something to get worried about, the answer is more targets – not a different target.
