After an interesting week 2 in football, here is your preview for what should be an entertaining week 3.
Game Breakers:
QB
- Brett Favre – He wasn’t spectacular last week with only 181 yards, a TD, and an INT but keep in mind that was against the Patriots defense, which is nothing short of spectacular. The Jets have also been cautious with Favre, because he isn’t fully comfortable with the playbook yet. Yet, after some conservative play calling in week 2, look for the Jets to let their gunslinger loose as they look for some big plays against the Chargers. San Diego allowed 4 TDs and 350 yards to another cannon arm last week, Jay Cutler.
- David Garrard - If you took Garrard to be your starting QB, you have undoubtedly been disappointed thus far with only 1 TD, 3 INTs and only 380 passing yards. But, he has played two strong defenses in the Titans and Bills, and should have an easier match up vs. the Colts. SS Bob Sanders is out for the Colts, which should provide more running and passing opportunities for Garrard. As long as he can get back to playing the mistake free ball that he was so good at last year, he’ll be in good shape.
RB
- Marshawn Lynch – Those who drafted Marshawn in the first round probably aren’t ecstatic about his play thus far, but the second effort was against a notoriously difficult team to run against – the Jaguars. Lynch has the potential to be a dynamic runner, and look for him to break out against Oakland.
WR
- Steve Smith – He is arguably one of the most explosive receivers in the NFL, and the Panthers finally get him back this week. I’m sure Jake Delhomme will be exuberant to have such a weapon in his offense and will look to use him immediately.
- Bernard Berrian – He is always a big play threat, but it’s really impossible to be a threat with Tavaris Jackson at QB. Fortunately for Berrian, Gus Frerotte is taking over this week who has the ability to throw the ball long.
Potential Disappointments:
QB
- Kurt Warner – I said this last week and I was wrong, but I’m stubborn enough to say it again. Warner is facing the Redskins who have already held two good QBs at bay (Drew Brees and Eli Manning) and Warner should be in for the same treatment. The ‘Skins D has allowed only 1 TD while recording 3 INT’s, which doesn’t bode well for Warner.
RB
- Ladanian Tomlinson – LT is questionable for week 2, and even if he plays probably won’t be at full strength. In addition to that, he is playing the Jets who have had a stellar run D thus far and have not allowed any big rushing days. It’s unlikely that LT will be able to produce like a first overall pick this week, but who knows.
- Ryan Grant – He’s another questionable player, and might not be able to carry the workload of a first round pick like you’d want. Plus, the Packers will be putting more and more faith in Aaron Rogers given his success and facing a daunting Cowboys D.
WR
- Chansi Stuckey – Despite being added in many fantasy football leagues lately because he has 2 TDs already, it’s unlikely Stuckey will be able to keep up the production. The Jets have multiple TE’s they want to work into the offense, and he is certainly not a top 2 WR for the Jets.
Waiver Wire Pickup – If you’re just acting now you might be too late, but RB Darren Sproles is still available in a decent percentage of leagues, and could potentially get a start with LT injured for the Chargers this week.

I disagree on Garrard and Stuckey.
Garrard is not going to be nearly effective as he was last year, due to the fact that he’s lost both his guards in front of him for the season and his center who will be out for at least the next four weeks. It’s hard to put up those numbers once again when you are only playing with 40% of your starting line. He’s already been sacked 9 times this year. he’s on pace to break last season’s mark of 21 by week five. Jerry Porter isn’t expected to play either, so that hurts Garrard.
I agree that Stuckey should not receive attention in regular leagues, maybe deep leagues though perhaps. I don’t agree with your analysis, though. The Jets plan to utilize him as their third wide receiver and at the moment Laveranues Coles does not have the chemistry with Favre that both Stuckey and Cotchery do. He could be a go to guy on third downs as well as a nice endzone target for Favre. I wouldn’t be too quick to judge Stuckey. This is a guy that had second-round talent, but fell to the seventh due to injury in his senior season. He’s tied for the Jets lead in receptions and with the Chargers being the second worst team when it comes to pass defense, Stuckey might not be a bad option this week.
