Opinion: Thoughts On Last Night

By Anthony De Rosa on Sep 05, 2008, 11:27 am

The Giants had their first attempt to prove last season was not a fluke, and came out swinging against the Redskins in their opener.

The offense clicked like it didn’t miss a beat in the first series. Brandon Jacobs dominated the run, despite the popular belief that he would split a decent amount of carries with Ahmad Bradshaw and Derrick Ward. Plaxico Burress stormed out of the gate with over 60 yards receiving in the first series alone.

Eli Manning looked cool as a cucumber, a fully evolved field sergeant of a quarterback, directing his troops to battle. He called audibles with total confidence and ease, a stark contrast from the perceived meekness he possessed early on in his maturation.

Kenny Phillips had his first key play of this season when he stopped Devin Thomas a yard short of a first down on the Skins’s second series of the third quarter, forcing them to punt. He stopped the Skins for good on a pass to Santana Moss on the right sideline on the final drive.

Jason Campbell didn’t seem to be completely at ease with his new West Coast offense the Skins are running this season, and the Giants front defensive line made him pay for it.

One of the few mistakes the Giants made was on the lone TD to Santana Moss. Aaron Ross couldn’t get to Moss in time on a cross pattern. Ross wound up being the leading tackler with 8.

Brandon Jacobs looked like a monster truck barreling down the field of the Meadowlands. Maybe they can hire him during the week to come back and crush cars? The one picky thing I can lay on him is he couldn’t seem to get a handle on any of the screen passes Eli tossed his way.

Overall not too much rust, and the team looks like it can pick up where it left off from last year. We talked a lot about the defense but the offense seemed to fall asleep in the second half. They will need to pick up the urgency there as they take on some of the better teams in the NFC.

So tell us, what are your thoughts on last night? Are you more or less confident after what you saw, or is it too soon to draw any conclusions?

I don’t know. Besides Jacobs and Plaxico, I think the offense looked middling. Eli did okay, but he and his other receivers were out of sync. Eli still has myopic vision that he has always had. I was hoping he’d look elsewhere a bit more.

Either way nice win to start off the season. The offense just needs to get better though.
