GFB Fantasy Football Watch

...posted by Andrew Beaton...

The Hot Foot and Mets Blog fantasy football league drafted last night, which includes GFB Editor In Chief Anthony De Rosa and GFB contributors Gary Grund and Peter Wade.  Even though the Giants have already played, here some players to watch out for Week 1.

Game breakers:

QB

  • Tony Romo – Romo is primed to improve on his solid season last  year, and against Cleveland is a great place to do it.  Cleveland gave up the 9th most passing yards in the NFL last year and even though it was a young secondary that will look to develop, the Browns failed to make any major offseason acquisitions to improve the secondary.
  • Ben Roethlisberger – Big Ben bounced back last season after a mediocre 2006 and will have a great opportunity to continue that against Houston who had the 8th worst pass defense in the NFL last year.  The Texans will be a haven for all passers to face for the first six weeks with their #1 CB Dunta Robinson on the PUP list.

RB

  • Thomas Jones - Even though he had more than 1,000 yards last year in his first season for the Jets, not many people were pleased with Thomas’s one TD season.  Jones will have less guys in the box with Brett Favre taking the snaps, and gets to face a Dolphins team that gave up the most rushing yards per game last season, but no longer has stars Jason Taylor (Redskins) and Zach Thomas (Cowboys)

WR

  • Terrell Owens - TO gets to play the Browns in week 1, who as mentioned above with Romo have a poor pass defense.  Owens also has a history of playing very well in week 1.  Here are TO’s last five opening days:
    2007 – 86 yards, 2 TDs
    2006 – 80 yards, 1 TD
    2005 – 112 yards, 0 TDs
    2004 – 68 yards, 3 TDs
    2003 – 112 yards, 0 TDs

Potential Disappointments:

QB

  • Tom Brady - Yes, that Tom Brady.  Even though he is a virtual lock to play this weekend health-wise, I’m not sure anybody is superhuman enough to overcome not playing in any pre-season games.  He also plays a KC team with a strong defense.  The Chiefs primary strength is in its linebackers, and they also drafted Glenn Dorsey for DT, so Brady will have a difficult time if he is planning on relying on the run.
  • Peyton Manning – Can he get over not playing in the preseason? See Tom Brady.

RB

  • Ryan Grant – Grant has to face the Vikings who have the best run D in the NFL.  Grant also no longer has Brett Favre to stretch the field, and we’ll have to see if Aaron Rodgers can keep guys out of the box as well as Brett did.

WR

  • Greg Jennings – His main game last year was catching bombs from Brett Favre, and with Aaron Rodgers under center now he might not have that big play potential that he showed last year.

Waiver Wire Watch – Recent reports have been saying Ronnie Brown might have a bigger role in Miami than expected, so if he’s available in your league he’s definitely worth picking up.

Well I have one of your ‘game breakers’ (Roethlisberger) and none of your ‘potential disappointments’ so despite having ‘actual disappointment’ Amani Toomer consider me excited.
