Afternoon Tidbits: Tynes Could Face IR, Wright Out

According to Mike Garafolo of the Star-Ledger, Giants kicker Lawrence Tynes, who suffered a left knee injury a week or so ago in training camp, will undergo an exploratory surgery tomorrow morning that will determine how much time he is expected to miss. Three people with knowledge of the situation told Garafolo, “It’s possible the surgery will reveal an injury could land Tynes on the team’s injured reserve list.”

The Giants signed free agent kicker Josh Huston after Tynes was deemed unavailable for last weekend’s game. Huston went 5-for-5 in extra point attempts, but missed a 42-yard field goal.

If the Giants lose Tynes for an extended period of time and don’t feel comfortable heading into the season with Huston, the Giants always could take a look at the available options on the free agent market. A number of options include Jay Feely, who played for the Giants during the 2005 and 2006 seasons. Former Colts kicker Mike Vanderjagt is available, as is former Cowboys kicker Billy Cundiff.

Anthony Wright, who is leading the backup quarterback battle, will not play in Saturday’s game against the Jets due to a back injury.

Both defensive end Justin Tuck (foot) and linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka (groin) practiced today and are on track to play in Saturday’s game. Meanwhile, Wright, Tynes, and linebackers Jonathan Goff and Antonio Pierce all missed practice today.
