Mailbag: Jaws Unfair To Diehl?

I am relatively new to Giants blog. Last night something Ron Jaworski said on the pre-season telecast really ticked me off, as a former college O-Lineman. When introducing the starting lineups, he followed the offensive line by saying ( and I won’t quote him because I don’t have the exact quote) That David Diehl is a guy who stands out who must improve, he struggled a lot last year giving up 11 sacks and he must improve and pick up his play.

I just about flipped over in my seat……First off 11 sacks? Who is counting that, some production guy in a truck who knows nothing about the protection of an offensive line in the NFL. There is NO WAY you can come up with that number unless you are an offensive coordinator who watches the film and breaks down a protection and the play.

Just because the guy came from his side does not mean it was his fault. Second point, going into last season the Giants had a HUGE question mark at Left Tackle. Diehl answered all those questions by being rock solid. I think all Giant fans, Front office personal, coaching staff would say this. Also its obvious the Giants didn’t get the memo that he struggled last season, by rewarding him with a 6 year 18 million dollar contract.

Brad, thanks for writing. I happen to agree with you. I don’t see how Ron comes to that conclusion simply by looking at numbers on a paper. This does not tell the entire story, and you can’t place all the blame on Diehl for those sacks.

The entire offensive line works as a unit, and while Diehl certainly deserves some of the blame for those 11 sacks, which is not all that many when you compare it to other O-lines in the NFL, it really is a pretty poor inference for Jaws to make.
