Coughlin Speaks At Camp

...posted by Anthony De Rosa...

Coach Tom Coughlin addressed the media at camp today, here is a full transcript of his comments.

Last night’s weather forecast was different than the one this morning. I had planned on going out, I went out to the field, it was raining, it was steady and I didn’t like the conditions of the field, so we changed to what had been planned as a jog through, but outside and hopefully we’ll work this afternoon.  There is, unless the thing has changed again, there is some indication of sun, possible sun with scattered showers throughout the afternoon, so we’ll see.

If you can’t get tonight in, will you still do one tomorrow or will you switch to two?

I don’t know, we’ll see what happens then, I’m not sure.  I may move it up today, if there was a window, I’d move it, but right now it’s on a normal schedule.

With the rain, have you missed out on things you’ve wanted to do?

We actually have not missed…we’ve adjusted a couple of practices, but we have not missed anything.  To be honest with you, it requires that you spend way too much time considering the weather, it’s a ridiculous amount of time you spend on that, but with the way this month of August has been, there’s no other way of doing it.  You just have to try and stay out in front of it.  Some we’ve been able to do a good job of predicting, and others not so well.  We have not missed, for example, this morning was scheduled as a jog through, but the weather forced us inside, fine, we didn’t want to be, but if it did we would still get our mental work in and that’s basically what happened.

How does this affect your preparation for preseason games?

Well, it always does.  Anytime you can’t go full speed, it affects your preparation.  The mental parts. We’ve gone through the mental parts and we’ve gone through the meetings, we continue to have meetings and we’ll have more.  Hopefully, we’ll practice this afternoon.

Are you sure you’re going to have Tynes for Monday night, or are you guys thinking about bringing in another kicker?

We’re probably going to bring somebody in…we’re looking at some other alternatives.

For the long term, I mean, Monday is long enough, but do you think it will drag beyond that?

I have no idea. There is no sense in speculating about that, because the medical people are telling me where he is.  He’s feeling better and getting there, but you know, it’s just one of those things.

Do you have your quarterback rotation set for Monday night?

I haven’t really talked to the coaches, so I’m pretty sure how I’m going to plan, but I’ll wait until I talk to the coaches about it.

What have you seen from Terrell Thomas?

He’s had a good camp.  He’s a smart, young kid and he’s trying to learn as he goes.  He made a real nice play on special teams the other night, which was impressive.

What have you seen from Aaron Ross in his second year, after the hub bub of his rookie season?

Well, I have. He’s worked hard, he’s done a good job in practice.  His attitude has been really good, so we look to him, and I think he’s had a good camp. He’s a real good guy in terms of endurance and being able to get out there. He has this summer, he has this camp.  He seems to, knock knock, not have too many issues. When David Diehl was out earlier this week,  Adam Koets worked in with the first team. As did Whimper.

Yeah, but, did Koets have a good camp this summer?

We’re looking for consistency, obviously, in all of those young guys. That’s what they strive for as well.  He’s had his very good days, and occasionally, one or two errors, but he’s a real try hard guy and he’s
focused on being a better football player and he certainly is having those opportunities. In the game against Detroit, it looked like he played well. He did, he played well.  Obviously, we didn’t win the game, but he had a good opportunity, he played a lot of snaps and that was good for him and Guy Whimper.  Both played a considerable number of snaps.

Last year, he was a little bit inside, you’re not doing that anymore?

Well, we’ve tried to…he’ll have to play both inside and outside.  We even had him at center last spring. You know, he does snap the ball with our center quarterback exchange.  He’s been primarily concentrating on left and right tackle.  Both of those guys have been flipping.

How frustrating is it that Mario Manningham has the quad injury and is unable to practice?

Well, it’s not helping.  We just don’t see anything.  He can’t practice, so you go on everything you understood about him when you drafted him. He’s in every meeting, he does all that, but he doesn’t get to rep it.
For a young guy, they need to do it.

How about Steve Smith?  He seems to be having a groin thing here?

He had his experience last year, but… Yeah, but that’s not been good either.  It started out as a groin, it went to a hamstring and you know, it’s been one thing after another. That has not helped.  We went through this last year, and we count on Steve being out there.  So it’s been that position this year that’s given us a lot of headaches. With all of the guys hurt, it’s been a good opportunity for Sinorice Moss, who has been healthy. A lot of guys are taking full advantage of that.  (Domenik) Hixon has done well and Sinorice has done well.  Every opportunity they get, they try to. Brandon London has been impressive the last couple days.

Has Sinorice done more this camp than in previous seasons with a little more consistency?

We’re starting to, yeah.  He’s getting a lot of reps and he’s taking advantage of it.
