Coughlin Speaks At Camp

Here is the full transcript of Tom Coughlin’s comments to reporters today at camp.

As far as the off the field issue that has my name involved in it, the only thing I’ll say is that I received two different letters. I turned them over to the league authorities, as was recommended. It is in their hands, and that is all I can tell you. I was not aware of this information; whoever leaked this information or put it out there did not inform me that this was going to take place. That is all I can say about it.

Tom, I think the FBI said they have an indictment so that is why it came out?

I really don’t know how these things work. That is all I know. That is all I know.

Are you excited to have Plaxico (Burress) practicing again?

Well, he has been out there two days. He has run some routes and done some individual. That is pretty much what he has done. It is a step in the right direction.

Can you talk about the (Shane) Olivea situation?

We had an extended amount of time here where we tried to improve his situation. It didn’t seem like we were getting very far. It was very unfortunate, because we thought when we first brought Shane (Olivea) in this would be something where both parties would benefit. We had a veteran football player, a guy who had gone through some things, and was anxious to really start his career over. We thought that this was the right situation. We worked him out; he was in outstanding shape and we didn’t think there was going to be any down time whatsoever.  The unfortunate thing is that on his best practice day, that very evening, he couldn’t come back out and practice. We wished him well, and hopefully he will get himself back to where he feels good about having an opportunity.

His back was that bad?

All I know is what was told to me. He had achieved a certain amount of rehabilitation but it wasn’t there.

Have you changed the rotation at all against the (Cleveland) Browns to make sure that  (Andre) Woodson gets on the field?

He will, but I haven’t even determined it.

(Mathias) Kiwanuka?

(Mathias) Kiwanuka got a slight groin strain.

Can you talk a little about what Chris Palmer has helped Eli (Manning) with? Just in terms of his accuracy and the relationship.

Chris (Palmer) is an outstanding coach. He has done a good job one on one with Eli (Manning), as he has done throughout his career in all capacities as a quarterback coach. I knew that. Chris (Palmer) had coached for me and he has been successful in the league coaching quarterbacks everywhere he has been. The opportunity was there and we were fortunate to bring him here. He has been a real good addition to our staff.

Anything new with (Mario) Manningham?

Nah, just speculation. Not even worth talking about.

When you grab a back of a jersey, is that like a horse collar? Or were you just worried about an injury on that interception?

No. Those are bad. Those are chances for hamstrings when you do that. We don’t want them grabbing the jerseys, in any capacity. It is competitive, it’s a turnover and they think that they have to make a play. Instinctively they reach out, but they have to be reminded that those are the times when you get an unfortunate injury. We are trying to be preventative in that respect.
