David Carr connected on a 13 yard touchdown to Craphonso Thorpe in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 10-10 but it resulted in losing effort against the Lions in the Giants first preseason contest.
Detroit kicker Eddie Johnson‘s 41 yard field goal with a little less than 3 minutes left proved to be the difference in the 10-13 loss. Carr attempted to put the Giants over the top, taking them to the 40 on their final drive, but was called for intentional grounding and then sacked on the next play.
Both backups played well, Anthony Wright threw for 116 yards while Carr completed 8 of 9 passes for 104 yards. Eli Manning did not see much action, and completed 2 of 6 passes in two series. Lawrence Tynes connected for a 33 yard field goal for the Giants first scoring play of the preseason in the second quarter.
Sinorice Moss led the receiving core with 55 yards, capped by a 46 yard reception. Brandon London was right behind him with 46 yards on 3 receptions.
Brandon Jacobs had a 27 yard run, but the rest of the running backs failed to gain much traction. Reuben Droughns lost a fumble and along with Ahmad Bradshaw was limited to a combined total of 10 yards. Derrick Ward had 12 yards on 4 carries.
The Giants defense allowed 214 yards passing and 84 rushing, had no sacks and failed to cause any turnovers.
Rookie LB Jonathan Goff fractured a bone in his back and left the game in the second quarter. Goff is the third string middle linebacker behind Antonio Pierce and Chase Blackburn.
The Giants next preseason game is at home on Monday, August 18th against the Cleveland Browns at 8PM ET.
