Here we go. It seems like Phillips is the move here. Lets watch.
And there he goes! With the 31st pick the Giants select Miami safety Kenny Phillips!
I love the pick, the Giants needed a safety and they got the best one on the board. I wasn’t sure he would be there, and I am delighted he was.
Phillips was voted to the All-ACC 1st team and was a Semi-Finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award for Best Defensive Back. Phillips ranked second on the team with a career high, 95 tackles (69 solo), made 6.5 tackles for loss, forced three fumbles, broke up 5 passes and intercepted 2 passes.
Rob Tribbett at the WarRoomReport.com calls Phillips a “terrific athlete and team leader” and an “aggressive defensive player who makes good breaks on the ball”
Tribbett cites his weaknesses as “plays out of control at times” and wonders if he has “the size and bulk to handle blockers on the second level.” Tribett thinks he can “only play in a scheme that allows him to play deep zone or run free.”
Suddenly a trade by Gang Green to take Green Bay’s 30th pick has the Jets and Giants facing back to back picks!
Wow, now this is gonna be very interesting. Brian is in the SNY courtyard outside interviewing Vernon Gholston (check out the video on TheJetsBlog.com) so I am not getting the chance to enjoy this moment with him. Hurry back Brian!
Gary and I seem to think the Jets will take Devin Thomas here, leaving Phillips the likely pick for the Giants. They might go after a QB, but that would be admitting Clemens was a mistake in my opinion.
Packers receive the Jets 2nd round and 4th round pick in return.
The Seattle Seahawks take Lawrence Jackson, who most had behind Philip Merling and Calais Cambell.
Somewhat surprising pick there. Here comes the Niners pick, another head scratcher.
Kentwan Balmner, the defensive back from North Carolina goes to the 49ers with the 29th pick.
Green Bay, your move. Hold on to your seats Giants fans.
It gets interesting here for the Giants. Three picks away. The Seahawks on the clock. Tough question here, if the best WR is still available at 31, do you take him?
I just popped over the SNY newsroom and asked Ray Lucas and Brian Custer what they thought about the Giants entertaining the thought of Jeremy Shockey. Lets just say these guys have some pretty strong opinions on opposite sides of the debate here.
Lucas said he thinks the Giants would be nuts to trade Shockey, that a player like him does not come along everyday. Custer doesn’t believe the hype, considering Shockey not in the same conversation as a guy like Jason Witten and that the Giants proved they could win without him last season. Lucas was passionate about his support of Shockey, and Custer was equally so in his idea that the Giants could solider on without him.
Stay tuned folks, the draft is moving quickly with this new format.
The New England Patriots have taken Tennessee LB Jarod Mayo with the 10th overall pick.
This makes it a lot more likely the Giants will take Phillips at this point, if in fact he is still available.
I was having trouble remembering how the Patriots got such a high pick to begin with. Gary reminded me that the Pats traded #28 last year to the 49ers for a 4th rounder in 2007 and 1st rounder in 2008 (which ended up being #7)
Brian and I are camped out in Studio B at SNY Studios. Here’s a shot of us blogging away and monitoring the draft on the multiple monitors in the studio. We’ll be asking SNY talent questions throughout the draft so if you have anything in particular you want to ask Brian Custer, Ray Lucas or anyone else post it in the comments and I’ll try and get them to address it.
The Oakland Raiders are on the clock. Jets fans are on the edge of their seat to see if the Silver and Black will elect to draft Darren McFadden, making the Gang Green’s decision a heck of a lot easier.
Stay tuned as we watch the drama unfold.
Update 3:31 p.m. ET – The Oakland Raiders selected Darren McFadden fourth overall. Looks like Al Davis couldn’t resist, leaving the Jets fans with a likely choice of Gholston, McKelvin or trade down. It’s been reported that McKelvin is higher than Gholston on the Jets draft board. We’ll see how it breaks down.
